Small Ring (Brussels)
The Small Ring (french: Petite Ceinture, nl, Kleine Ring) inner ring road, formally R20 and N0 is a series of roadways in central Brussels, Belgium, surrounding the historic city centre. The city centre is usually defined as the area within the Small Ring; this area is called the Pentagon due to its pentagonal shape. The pentagon forms the core of the City of Brussels municipality. The road was built on the site of the 14th-century second walls of Brussels, after they had been torn down. During the second stage of the covering of the Senne in the 20th century, the river was diverted to underneath the western boulevards of the ring. This freed up the main tunnels that had contained the water to allow construction of the Brussels premetro with minimal disruption of the surface. The Small Ring is about 8 km long. The Madou Plaza Tower (french: Tour Madou Plaza, nl, Madoutoren) is a high-rise building in Brussels, Belgium. It was built in 1965, renovated between 2002 and 2006, and taken over by the European Commission. It is located on the Small Ring (Brussels' inner ring road), in the municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, at 1 /. It hosts the Commission's Directorate-General for Competition. Architecture The 33-story core of the Madou Tower was built in just over a month and has been compared as a smaller version of the MetLife Building in New York City. Madou is a Brussels Metro station on the northern segment of lines 2 and 6. It is located under the Small Ring (Brussels' inner ring road) at the /, near the Flemish Parliament and Madou Plaza Tower, in the municipality of the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, north of the City of Brussels, Belgium. Madou District () is a district of about 43,071 residents in Tainan, Taiwan. It owes its name to the Siraya language word ''Moatau'' or ''Mattou''. ''Mattau'' was one of the four core Sirayan villages during much of Taiwan's colonial history and figured heavily in the formation of colonial policy in Dutch Formosa. Currently, it is a well-known town in Tainan for its local culinary specialties and historical sites, and has become more prosperous in recent five years due to the presence of two universities. Jean-Baptiste Madou (3 February 1796 – 31 March 1877) was a Belgian painter and lithographer. Life Madou was born in Brussels. He studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts and was a pupil of Pierre Joseph Célestin François. While draftsman to the topographical military division at Kortrijk, he received a commission for lithographic work from a Brussels publisher. It was about 1820 that he began his artistic career. Between 1825 and 1827 he contributed to ''Les Vues pittoresques de la Belgique'', to a ''Life of Napoleon'', and to works on the costumes of the Netherlands, and later made a great reputation by his work in ''La Physionomie de la société en Europe depuis 1400 jusqu'à nos jours'' (1836) and ''Les Scenes de la vie des peintres''.
