''Madonna and Child'' is a 1504 oil on panel painting by Cima da Conegliano, now in a private collection. It was last sold at Christie's in London on 25 November 1966 as part of a sale of works from Sir Herbert Cook's collectionMaurice W. Brockwell, ''Abridged Catalogue of the Pictures at Doughty House Richmond Surrey in the Collection of Sir Herbert Cook'', London, 1932, p. 52 and is therefore sometimes known as the ''Cook Madonna'', not to be confused with another painting of that name by Crivelli now known to be the central panel of the Porto San Giorgio Altarpiece. Cima Da Conegliano
Giovanni Battista Cima, also called Cima da Conegliano (c. 1459 – c. 1517), was an Italian Renaissance painter, who mostly worked in Venice. He can be considered part of the Venetian school, though he was also influenced by Antonello da Messina, in the emphasis he gives to landscape backgrounds and the tranquil atmosphere of his works. Once formed his style did not change greatly. He mostly painted religious subjects, often on a small scale for homes rather than churches, but also a few, mostly small, mythological ones. He often repeated popular subjects in different versions with slight variations, including his Madonnas and ''Saint Jerome in a Landscape''. His paintings of the ''Madonna and Child'' include several variations of a composition that have a standing infant Jesus, which in turn are repeated several times. Sir Herbert Cook
Sir Herbert Frederick Cook, 3rd Baronet (18 November 1868 – 4 May 1939) was an English art patron and art historian. Life Only son of Sir Frederick Cook, 2nd Baronet, Sir Frederick Cook, he was educated at Harrow School and Balliol College, Oxford. He was subsequently called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1895. He married in 1898 to the Honourable Mary Hood, daughter of the Arthur Hood, 2nd Viscount Bridport, 2nd Viscount Bridport, with whom he had one son (Sir Francis Cook, 4th Baronet, Francis, who succeeded him) and two daughters. In 1920, he succeeded to his father's Cook baronets, baronetcy, along with the Sir Francis Cook, 1st Baronet, first baronet's art collection, which he catalogued in three volumes in 1913 and which thereafter became known in art history publications as the "Cook Collection, Doughty House, Richmond". Doughty House
Doughty House is a large house on Richmond, London, Richmond Hill in Richmond, London, England, built in the 18th century, with later additions. It has fine views down over the Thames, and both the house and gallery are Grade II listed buildings. The house was named after Elizabeth Doughty, who lived there from about 1786 and provided funds to build St Elizabeth of Portugal Church in The Vineyard, Richmond. It was the residence of the Cook baronets from when it was bought in 1849 by Francis Cook, 1st Viscount of Monserrate, and passed in his family by descent until after World War II. A was added in 1885 for his very important art collection. The first Lady Cook, the American suffragist Tennessee Claflin, was mistress of Doughty House from 1885 until her death. Porto San Giorgio Altarpiece
The Porto San Giorgio Altarpiece or Porto San Giorgio Polytpych was a 1470 multi-panel tempera and gold on panel altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli. Stylistically similar to Crivelli's Massa Fermana Altarpiece, the work was a fundamental step in his evolution away from the Paduan Renaissance towards a more delicate and realist style. Originally in San Giorgio church in Porto San Giorgio, Fermo, it was split up in the 19th century and sold in separate lots, meaning its panels are now split between a number of European and American museums. History A transcribed document in the Fermo archives (the original is now lost) states that the altarpiece was commissioned in 1470 by a man named Giorgio Salvadori, an Albanian immigrant to Italy fleeing the Ottoman advance after Skanderbeg's death in 1468. Bernard Berenson (June 26, 1865 – October 6, 1959) was an American art historian specializing in the Renaissance. His book ''The Drawings of the Florentine Painters'' was an international success. His wife Mary is thought to have had a large hand in some of the writings. Berenson was a major figure in the attribution of Old Masters, at a time when these were attracting new interest by American collectors, and his judgments were widely respected in the art world. Personal life Berenson was born Bernhard Valvrojenski in Butrimonys, Vilnius Governorate (now in Alytus district of Lithuania) to a Litvak family – father Albert Valvrojenski, mother Judith Mickleshanski, and younger siblings including Senda Berenson Abbott.
