Madison Township is one of the twenty-five townships of Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 496 people in the township. Geography Located in the northern part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Adams Township - northeast * Salem Township - southeast * Washington Township - south * Muskingum Township - southwest * Jefferson Township - west * Cass Township - northwest No municipalities are located in Madison Township. Name and history It is one of twenty Madison Townships statewide. In 1833, Madison Township had one saw mill, one flouring mill, one salt factory, one physician, one attorney, and several ancient mounds. Government The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. A tumulus (plural tumuli) is a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave or graves. Tumuli are also known as barrows, burial mounds or ''kurgans'', and may be found throughout much of the world. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names.
