Madeleine (opera)
''Madeleine'' is an opera in one act by Victor Herbert set to a libretto by Grant Stewart, after the French Play (theatre), play ''Je dîne chez ma mère'' (I'm dining at my mother's house) by Adrien Decourcelle and Lambert-Thiboust. It premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 24 January 1914 with Frances Alda in the title role. Reception and performance history For its world premiere on 24 January 1914, ''Madeleine'' was presented at the Metropolitan Opera as a double-bill with ''Pagliacci'' (with Enrico Caruso, Caruso as Canio). It had a total of six performances at the Met, three times paired with ''Pagliacci'', twice with ''Don Pasquale'', and once (for its final performance) with the United States premiere of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Wolf-Ferrari's ''L'amore medico''. Victor Herbert
Victor August Herbert (February 1, 1859 – May 26, 1924) was an American composer, cellist and conductor of English and Irish ancestry and German training. Although Herbert enjoyed important careers as a cello soloist and conductor, he is best known for composing many successful operettas that premiered on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I. He was also prominent among the Tin Pan Alley composers and was later a founder of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). A prolific composer, Herbert produced two operas, a cantata, 43 operettas, incidental music to 10 plays, 31 compositions for orchestra, nine band compositions, nine cello compositions, five violin compositions with piano or orchestra, 22 piano compositions and numerous songs, choral compositions and orchestrations of works by other composers, among other music. In opera or commedia dell'arte, a prima donna (; Italian for "first lady"; plural: ''prime donne'') is the leading female singer in the company, the person to whom the prime roles would be given. Andrés De Segurola
Andrés Perelló de Segurola (27 March 1874 – 23 January 1953) was a Spanish operatic bass. Biography He was born on 27 March 1874 in Valencia, Spain. He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company between 1901 and 1920 and later appeared in many films. He appeared as himself in the 1928 romantic comedy film ''The Cardboard Lover''. Towards the end of his career at the Metropolitan Opera, De Segurola also became an impresario. In 1916, he presented a four-week opera season at the Grand National Theatre in Havana, where his company included Geraldine Farrar and Pasquale Amato. After his retirement from the stage, he taught singing. Amongst his many pupils was Deanna Durbin. He married Mrs. John Bidlake in 1936. He died on 23 January 1953 in Barcelona, Spain. Antonio Pini-Corsi (12 June 1859 – 21 April 1918) was an Italian operatic baritone of international renown. He possessed a ripe-toned voice of great flexibility and displayed tremendous skill at patter singing. Pini-Corsi participated in numerous operatic premieres, portraying on stage such characters as Ford in Giuseppe Verdi's '' Falstaff'' and Schaunard in Giacomo Puccini's ''La bohème''.
