Maddalena ( lij, Madænn-a) is a neighbourhood in the old town of the Italian city of Genoa. It was one of the six ''sestiere, sestieri'' of ancient Genoa. At present it is part of the Genoa's city Municipio I (Centro Est). Located close to the Genoa#Old harbour, old harbour it had been for many centuries the seat of the economical power of the city. Etymology Maddalena takes its name from the church of Saint Mary Magdalene, documented since the 12th century.
