	New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 1973 The 1973 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the most radical redistribution of electoral districts in the history of New Brunswick, Canada. Under this redistribution, New Brunswick changed from a mixture of multi-member districts and single-member districts to a scheme of only single-member districts, from bloc voting electoral system to first past the post. As the number of members per district had been re-evaluated as recently as 1967, the number of members was not changed, and multi-member districts were simply subdivided to form single-member districts. Prior to the redistribution, New Brunswick had had the longest and deepest experience of multi-member districts of any province in Canada. 	New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 1994 The 1994 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the first re-alignment of electoral districts in New Brunswick, Canada, since 1973. Under this redistribution, several districts were changed significantly due to considerable population shifts from the northern part of the province to the south. The total number of districts was reduced from 58 to 55. Due to considerable population shifts over the course of two decades, some ridings were merged, while others were split in two, and some were unchanged. 	Madawaska-la-Vallée Madawaska-la-Vallée was a provincial electoral district which elected one member to the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of New Brunswick, Canada. It was created in the 1994 redrawing of electoral boundaries and dissolved in 2006. It was used in the 1995, 1999 and 2003 elections. Its only MLA was Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick representation Percy Mockler, now a member of the Senate of Canada. In 1994, the district was created largely by merging the districts of Madawaska Centre and Madawaska South. In 2006, most of the district was merged with Restigouche West to form Restigouche-la-Vallée. 	Madawaska-les-Lacs Madawaska Les Lacs-Edmundston is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The district was established in 1973 as Madawaska les Lacs when New Brunswick moved from a system of bloc voting to the first past the post electoral system. It had previously been a part of the Madawaska County electoral district which returned three members. It the 1994 electoral redistribution, it added parts of the old district of Madawaska Centre and it underwent only very minor boundary changes in 2006. In 2013, it added more of the city of Edmundston to its boundaries and was renamed. It was formerly one of the safest francophone seats in New Brunswick for the Progressive Conservatives. 	Gérald Clavette Gérald Clavette (born May 9, 1941) is a New Brunswick politician. As a Liberal, he served in cabinet as chairman of the Board of Management from 1987 to 1991 and then as Minister of Agriculture in the government of Frank McKenna from October 9, 1991 to April 25, 1994. Subsequently, he was the last Speaker of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly to be appointed by the government rather than elected by a secret ballot. He was initially appointed by the government in the fall of 1994 during the 52nd New Brunswick Legislative Assembly after Speaker Shirley Dysart stepped down at the request of the government. Shortly thereafter the House adopted new rules to elect the speaker by secret ballot. Clavette resigned and did not seek office under the new rules so mrs. Dysart was elected by the assembly under the new rules for the balance of the life of the assembly.
