''Macropodus'' is a genus of small to medium-sized labyrinth fish native to freshwater habitats in eastern Asia. Most species are restricted to southern China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Vietnam, but ''M. opercularis'' occurs as far north as the Yangtze basin, and ''M. ocellatus'' occurs north to the Amur River, as well as in Japan and Korea. In China, they are often used for fights, so they are named Chinese bettas because of their similarity to the genus ''Betta''. The paradise fish is one of the more aggressive members of its family. It is more aggressive than the three spot gourami, yet less pugnacious in nature than the less commonly kept combtail. Behaviour Paradise fish are fairly combative, harassing and attacking each other, as well as potentially assaulting and killing small fish. Macropodus Erythropterus
The red-backed paradise fish (''Macropodus erythropterus'') is a species of gourami endemic to streams in Vietnam. This species grows to a standard length of , and it is sometimes seen in the aquarium trade. Range and habitat The red-backed paradise fish is endemic to central Vietnam, where only known from the Quang Tri River, a part of the Giang River basin. Here it inhabits hill streams in areas with submerged roots and overhanging vegetation. Taxonomy This species cannot be reliably separated from '' M. hongkongensis'', '' M. opercularis'' and '' M. spechti'' by meristics and morphometrics.Winstanley, Tom, and Kendall D. Clements. "Morphological re-examination and taxonomy of the genus Macropodus (Perciformes, Osphronemidae)." Zootaxa 19.8 (2008): 1-27. It differs from the first two in colouration, but the validity of the generally recognised colour differences between ''M. erythropterus'' and ''M. spechti'' (the latter lacking red in the dorsal, anal and tail fins) i ...

The round-tailed paradise fish (''Macropodus ocellatus'') is a species of gourami native to eastern Asia, where it is found in Korea and China. It is also found in Japan but it is believed that they were introduced from Korea in the 1910s. It is also known to occur in the Amur Basin of Russia, but that is believed to be due to introductions. Macropodusinae
The Macropodusinae are a subfamily of freshwater anabantiform fishes in the gourami family Osphronemidae, which includes the paradisefish, fighting fish and licorice gouramis. Like all members of the family, these are air breathing fishes that frequently inhabit oxygen poor environments hostile to other fishes (the licorice gouramies of ''Parosphromenus'' inhabit well-oxygenated, but extremely soft and acidic, blackwater streams). They are native to Asia, from Pakistan and India to the Malay Archipelago and north-easterly towards Korea. Many members are common aquarium fish; by far the most famous is the Siamese fighting fish, ''Betta splendens'' (note that the domesticated form is very likely a hybrid). Most (not all) of the 70+ betta species are paternal mouthbrooders; the remaining members of the subfamily are bubblenesters like most osphronemids. The subfamily was originally named Macropodinae but this name was adjudged to be a junior homonym of the mammalian family M ...
