Macon Trax
The Macon Trax were a minor-league professional ice hockey team based in Macon, Georgia. They played in the low minor leagues Atlantic Coast Hockey League (2002–03), World Hockey Association 2 (2003–04) and Southern Professional Hockey League (2004–05), playing their home games at the Macon Coliseum. The team went to the championship finals in both the WHA2 and the SPHL, losing in each series to the league champion. This history prompted head coach Tommy Stewart to tell the ''Macon Telegraph'' that the team was "always a bridesmaid, never a bride." The Trax were one of eight minor league hockey teams purchased or founded by real estate mogul David Waronker starting in 2003. By January 2007 all but one of those teams had ceased operations. Macon, Georgia
Macon ( ), officially Macon–Bibb County, is a consolidated city-county in the U.S. state of Georgia. Situated near the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, it is located southeast of Atlanta and lies near the geographic center of the state of Georgia—hence the city's nickname, "The Heart of Georgia". Macon had a population of 157,346 in the year 2020. It is the principal city of the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 233,802 in 2020. James Brown Arena
James Brown Arena (formerly known as Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center) is a multi-purpose complex located in Augusta, Georgia. It is managed by Spectra Experiences. It features an 8,000-seat arena, renamed the James Brown Arena, in honor of musician James Brown on August 22, 2006. The complex also features a 2,800-seat theater, the William B. Bell Auditorium, and a exhibit hall that opens into a arena floor. The Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL) was a minor league hockey organization that operated between 1981 and 1987. The league was founded by Bill Coffey. The Bob Payne Trophy was awarded to the team who won the league playoff championship. According to a 1985 ''Montreal Gazette'' article, rookies were paid "$150 a week plus $35 for a victory" and veterans were paid "as much as $300 a week." Dominik Dawes
Dominick Dawes is an American ice hockey coach and former player who was the NCAA Division III coach of the year. Career Dawes played for Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica, New York. Upon graduating, Dawes played four years at Norwich for head coach Mike McShane. In his junior season, Dawes helped the Cadets win the program's second National Championship. After graduating with a degree in business management, Dawes played two years of professional hockey in the low-level Southern Professional Hockey League where he lost every fight he was in before retiring as a player. In 2006, Dawes began his coaching career, first serving as an assistant at Hamilton. After two years, he was named as the head coach for Neumann and looked to help the 10-year-old program continue to improve. In his first season, Dawes led the Knights to a respectable record but the team shone once the postseason began. The Augusta RiverHawks were a professional minor league ice hockey team based in Augusta, Georgia. They played in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) from 2010 to 2013. They played their home games at the James Brown Arena. History The Augusta RiverHawks were established as a new franchise in the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2010 by Bob and Diane Kerzner, who had formerly owned a different franchise, the Pee Dee/Twin City Cyclones. The RiverHawks replaced the Augusta Lynx, who had played in the city for ten years in the ECHL before folding in 2008. The name "RiverHawks" was announced for the new club on March 13, 2010, as the winning result of a fan vote.
