Macon Historic District (Macon, Georgia)
The Macon Historic District is a historic district in Macon, Georgia that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and was expanded in 1995. The original listing covered and included 1,050 contributing resources; the increase added and 157 contributing resources (of which 10 acres and 10 contributing buildings were already listed on the National Register in the Macon Railroad Industrial District). Macon was founded in 1823 in Bibb County on the bank of the Ocmulgee River. Many buildings reflect the 19th-century Greek Revival and Victorian styles of architecture. The district has commercial, government, educational, and residential buildings. The majority of their architectural features have been preserved. The Carmichael House, known also as Raines-Carmichael House, Raines-Miller-Carmichael House or Cadwalader Raines House, is a Greek Revival mansion at 1183 Georgia Avenue in Macon, Georgia, United States. Built in 1848, the house is a nationally significant example of Greek Revival architecture, built and designed by local master builder Elam Alexander. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Description and history The Carmichael House is located in central Macon, at the northeast corner of Georgia Avenue and College Street. Sidney Lanier Cottage
The Sidney Lanier Cottage is a historic cottage on High Street in Macon, Georgia, that was the birthplace of poet, musician, and soldier Sidney Lanier. Sidney Lanier Cottage was purchased by the Middle Georgia Historical Society in 1973, and opened to the public in 1975. Until 2021, the Sidney Lanier Cottage served as a museum, event space, and home of the Lanier Center for Literary Arts. The Thaddeus Goode Holt Peeler House, also known as the Holt–Peeler–Snow House, is a historic residence in Macon, Georgia, located at 1129 Georgia Avenue. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1971. The three-story house is an "exceptional example of Greek Revival architecture". It is one of few "old residences in the state having the horseshoe entrance steps with wrought iron railings." The Hatcher-Groover-Schwartz House is a historic residence in Macon, Georgia, that was built in 1880. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It is located at 1144-1146 on Georgia Avenue, in the historic center of Macon. The Grand Opera House, often called The Grand and originally known as the Academy of Music, is a historic opera house located in Macon, Georgia, United States. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it is now the performing arts center of Mercer University. First Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church in Macon, GA. History The place was frequently visited by Mr. Joseph C. Stiles, a licentiate and Evangelist of Hopewell Presbytery, who took it in as a part of his field. As the fruit of his ministry a church was organized June 18, 1826, of twenty five members, by Rev. Benjamin Gildersleeve, First Presbyterian Church was born on June 18, 1826, just three years after the city of Macon was chartered. The church continued to be a part of the Evangelistic field of Mr. Stiles, till 1828, when Rev. James C. Patterson became the regular supply for two years till the Fall of 1830.
