Mackworth is a village and civil parish in the borough of Amber Valley, in Derbyshire, England. The 2011 Census recorded a population for the parish of 229. Mackworth is about two miles (3.2 km) from Derby and ten miles (16 km) from Ashbourne. It shares its name with the nearby Mackworth Estate in Derby. Heritage Mackworth, a conservation village, is mentioned in the Domesday Book and has evidence of Roman occupation. The site of the original medieval village can still be seen in the slopes of the hillside. Mackworth Castle
Mackworth Castle was a 14th- or 15th-century structure located in Derbyshire, at the upper end of Mackworth village near Derby. The home for several centuries of the Mackworth family, it was at some point reduced to the ruins of a gatehouse suggestive of a grand castle. A survey from 1911 suggested that though the gatehouse resembled a castle, the rest of the structure may have been more modest. The remains are part of a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument. History The date of construction of the castle is uncertain; ranges have been given from the early 14th to the late 15th centuries. Mackworth is a suburb and electoral ward of the city of Derby, England. Is it located on the north-west of the city near to Markeaton Park and the suburb of Mickleover. It is also known as Mackworth Estate, to distinguish it from the nearby Mackworth village. The Mackworth ward also covers the New Zealand area as well as Mackworth itself. History Development as a housing estate began in the 1930s, with construction on Brackensdale Avenue, Greenland Avenue, Lilac Avenue and Laburnum Grove. Most of the area was developed during the 1950s (the first house completed in 1953) and it was one of the largest housing estates to be built in the city. Sir Humphrey Mackworth (Jan 1657–1727) was a British Business magnate, industrialist and politician. He was involved in a business scandal in the early 18th century and was a founding member of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge.
