Mackensen (Dassel)
Mackensen is a village of about 450 inhabitants which is incorporated into the city of Dassel ( Northeim district, Germany) since 1974. This village lies at the east side of the Solling mountains. The name Mackensen is a derivation of Makkonhusun, which in medieval times in the eastphalian language meant: village of a man named Makko. It was mentioned in a written list of Corvey Abbey in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, it was a part of the Suilbergau district, their men being ministeriales of the Counts of Dassel, who lived on the nearby Hunnesrück castle. Today Mackensen is located at the political border between the district of Northeim and the district of Holzminden (that border goes through a nearby hill named Heukenberg). In medieval times, Mackensen was located at a border, too, when it belonged to the Bishopric of Hildesheim, because the neighbouring territory of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel began nearby. Anton Ludwig Friedrich August von Mackensen (born Mackensen; 6 December 1849 – 8 November 1945), ennobled as "von Mackensen" in 1899, was a German field marshal. He commanded successfully during World War I of 1914–1918 and became one of the German Empire's most prominent and competent military leaders. After the armistice of November 1918 the victorious Allies interned Mackensen in Serbia for a year. He retired from the army in 1920; in 1933 Hermann Göring made him a Prussian state councillor. During the Nazi era (1933–1945), Mackensen remained a committed monarchist and sometimes appeared at official functions in his First World War uniform. Senior NSDAP members suspected him of disloyalty to the Third Reich, but nothing was proven against him. Eberhard Von Mackensen
Friedrich August Eberhard von Mackensen (24 September 1889 – 19 May 1969) was a German general and war criminal during World War II who served as commander of the 1st Panzer Army and the 14th Army. Following the war, Mackensen stood trial for war crimes before a British military tribunal in Italy where he was convicted and sentenced to death for his involvement in the Ardeatine massacre. The sentence was later commuted and Mackensen was released in 1952. He died in West Germany in 1969. Fritz Mackensen (born 8 April 1866 in Greene, near Kreiensen, Duchy of Brunswick – 12 May 1953 in Bremen) was a German painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting and Art Nouveau. He was a friend of Otto Modersohn and Hans am Ende, and was one of the co-founders of the artists' colony at Worpswede. From 1933 to 1935 he was head of the ''Nordische Kunsthochschule'' in Bremen (today's University of the Arts Bremen). In 1937 he became a member of the Nazi Party. He was buried in the Worpswede Cemetery.
