Mackay, Australia
} Mackay () is a city in the Mackay Region on the eastern or Coral Sea coast of Queensland, Australia. It is located about north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is described as being in either Central Queensland or North Queensland, as these regions are not precisely defined. More generally, the area is known as the Mackay–Whitsunday Region. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's sugar. Name The city was named after John Mackay. In 1860, he was the leader of an expedition into the Pioneer Valley. Initially Mackay proposed to name the river Mackay River after his father George Mackay. Thomas Henry Fitzgerald surveyed the township and proposed it was called Alexandra after Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who married Prince Edward (later King Edward VII). Coral Sea
The Coral Sea () is a marginal sea of the South Pacific off the northeast coast of Australia, and classified as an interim Australian bioregion. The Coral Sea extends down the Australian northeast coast. Most of it is protected by the French Natural Park of the Coral Sea (french: Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail) and the Australian Coral Sea Marine Park. The sea was the location for the Battle of the Coral Sea, a major confrontation during World War II between the navies of the Empire of Japan, and the United States and Australia. The sea contains numerous islands and reefs, as well as the world's largest reef system, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981. Alexandra, Queensland
Alexandra is a suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Alexandra had a population of 193 people. Geography Alexandra is flat low-lying land bordered to the north by the Pioneer River and to the south by Bakers Creek. The Peak Downs Highway passes from east to west through the centre of the locality; there is a junction with the Mackay–Eungella Road which exits the locality in the north-west. Most of the housing is clustered around these two roads. Most of the land in the suburb is used for sugarcane farming. The Finch Hatton branch of the Mackay Railway ran through the locality from east to west. After the closure of the railway, a sugarcane tramways replaced it to provide transport for the harvested sugarcane from the canefields to the sugar mills. Queensland Governor
The governor of Queensland is the representative in the state of Queensland of the monarch of Australia. The Pioneer Valley is the colloquial and promotional name for the portion of the Connecticut River Valley that is in Massachusetts in the United States. It is generally taken to comprise the three counties of Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin. John Mackay (Australian Pioneer)
John Mackay (26 March 1839 – 11 March 1914) was a Scottish Highlands-born explorer, sailor, blackbirder and harbourmaster, best known for having the town of Mackay in Australia named after him. Early life John Mackay was born on 26 March 1839 to George and Ann Mackay in Inverness, Scotland. He moved with his parents to Australia in 1854 where they settled a year later in the New England district in the British colony of New South Wales. Mackay's father bought a property he named Ness Cottage on Saumarez Creek near Uralla and became a proprietor of several hotels in that town. As a young man, John Mackay involved himself in gold prospecting at the nearby Rocky River goldfields. Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands of various sizes off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Brisbane. The northernmost of the islands are off the coast by the town of Bowen, while the southernmost islands are off the coast by Proserpine.
