Machuca
''Machuca'' is a 2004 internationally co-produced film co-written and directed by Andrés Wood. It stars Matías Quer, Ariel Mateluna, Manuela Martelli, and Aline Küppenheim alongside Federico Luppi. Set in Santiago during the months leading up to the 1973 coup d'état led by General Augusto Pinochet – which overthrew Salvador Allende's socialist government – the film tells the story of two boys who attend an upper-class elementary school: Gonzalo Infante – who belongs to a rich family with a European background – and Pedro Machuca – who is poor and comes from an indigenous background. They are classmates and become friends at this English-language Catholic elite school, which Machuca attends thanks to the social integration project developed by its director, Father McEnroe. Andrés Wood Montt (born 14 September 1965) is a Chilean film director, producer and writer. Some of his most popular films include ''Machuca'', '' Violeta se fue a los cielos'', and ''Historias de Futbol''. He created his own production company known as Wood Producciones in 1993. Manuela Abril Martelli Salamovich (born April 16, 1983 in Santiago) is a Chilean film and television actress and director best known for her roles in the films ''B-Happy'' and ''Machuca''. Aline Adriana Küppenheim Gualtieri (born 10 August 1969) is a Chilean actress. Biography and career Born to a French father and a Chilean mother, Kuppenheim spent his early years traveling around different parts of Europe as a result of his parents' trade -both artisans-. From there, her interest for drawing was also born, since -according to his own confession- he used to draw with chalk in the streets of Paris, while his parents worked. Saint George's College, founded in 1936 and run by the Congregation of Holy Cross, is a private school in Santiago, Chile. According to Seminarium Head Hunting, one third of the CEOs of the top 200 companies in Chile are graduates of the school. Gerardo Herrero Pérez-Gamir (born 28 January 1953) is a Spanish film director, screenwriter and producer. He is a prolific promoter of international coproductions and collaborations between Spain and Hispanic American countries. Federico Luppi (; February 23, 1936 – October 20, 2017) was an Argentine-Spanish film, TV, radio and theatre actor. He won numerous awards throughout his acting career, including a Concha de Plata at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Biography Luppi worked mostly in Argentine cinema, but also worked in Chile, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. Mamoun Hassan (12 December 1937 – 29 July 2022) was a Saudi-born British screenwriter, director, editor, producer and teacher of film who held prominent positions in British cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, frequently backing experimental work.
