Theodore Mavrogordato
Theodore Michel Mavrogordato (31 July 1883 – 24 August 1941) was a tennis player from Great Britain who was active during the first decades of the 20th century. Career Mavrogordato represented Oxford University in the 1904 and 1905 Oxford v. Cambridge matches. He played his first Wimbledon singles' competition in 1904 and lost in the first round to Frederick Payn. In 1907 he reached the final of the All England Plate but was beaten by George Hillyard in two straight sets. His best achievement in the Wimbledon singles event was reaching the semi-final of the All-Comers tournament on three occasions. The first time was in 1909 when he lost in four sets to Major Ritchie. His second semi-final appearance came in 1914 and this time he lost in straight sets to German Otto Froitzheim. Tennis was part of the Summer Olympic Games program from the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics, but was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics due to disputes between the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the International Olympic Committee over how to define amateur players. After two appearances as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 (with a U-21 age limit), it returned as a full medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics open for all players regardless of their age and status and has been played at every summer Games since then. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, 1992, semifinal losers shared bronze medals. In all other years, a playoff match for the bronze medal was staged. The 1912 Summer Olympics ( sv, Olympiska sommarspelen 1912), officially known as the Games of the V Olympiad ( sv, Den V olympiadens spel) and commonly known as Stockholm 1912, were an international multi-sport event held in Stockholm, Sweden, between 5 May and 22 July 1912. Twenty-eight nations and 2,408 competitors, including 48 women, competed in 102 events in 14 sports. With the exception of tennis (starting on 5 May) and football and shooting (both starting on 29 June), the games were held within a month with an official opening on 6 July. It was the last Olympics to issue solid gold medals and, with Japan's debut, the first time an Asian nation participated. Stockholm was the only bid for the games, and was selected in 1909. Edith Hannam
Edith Margaret Hannam (''née'' Boucher; 28 November 1878 – 16 January 1951) was a female tennis player from Great Britain. She played at the 1912 Summer Olympics and won two gold medals. Family life Edith Margaret Boucher was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire on 28 November 1878, the daughter of John and Julia Boucher, her father was a pharmaceutical chemist. Boucher married Francis John Hannam at Long Ashton in 1909, as a Captain in the Gloucestershire Regiment he was killed in action in France on 5 July 1916. Tennis career In 1909 at the tennis tournament in Cincinnati Masters, Cincinnati, Hannam won the singles and mixed doubles titles and was a doubles finalist.
