MV ''Cape Pine''Commodores BoatsCape Pine (accessed 2013-02-20) is a charter boat operated by the Maritime Heritage Society of Vancouver. She began life as USS ''SC-715'', a SC-497-class submarine chaser of the United States Navy. She was later transferred to the United States Coast Guard and served under the name USCGC ''Air Killdeer'' (WAVR 433). Finally sold into mercantile service, as the ''Cape Pine'', she worked as a high-endurance fish packer in the fisheries of the Canadian coast, and was then sold to the Maritime Heritage Society of Vancouver. The ''SC-497''s were based on the experimental submarine chaser, USS ''SC-453''. Submarine chasers of this variety were collectively nicknamed "wooden boats of World War II, the splinter fleet" due to their wooden hulls. History The ''SC-497''s were off-shore patrol and anti-submarine warfare vessels. Seventy of the ''SC-497''s were converted into patrol control crafts (SCC), 18 were converted into coastal minesweepers (AMC), and 8 were converted into patrol gunboats, motor (PGM). HNoMS ''Hitra'' is a Royal Norwegian Navy submarine chaser that saw action during World War II. She is named after the Norwegian island of Hitra. History Wartime service ''Hitra'' was originally built as a SC-497 class submarine chaser for the United States Navy. She was laid down on 22 September 1942 by the Fisher Boat Works of Detroit and launched on 31 March 1943. She was commissioned into the US Navy as USS ''SC-718'' on 25 May 1943. In August 1943 US Admiral Harold R. Stark, commander of US Naval Forces Europe, ordered ''SC-718'' and two other SC-class subchasers - ''SC-683'' and ''SC-1061'' - to be transferred to Britain. Operation Magic Carpet was the post-World War II operation by the War Shipping Administration to repatriate over eight million American military personnel from the European, Pacific, and Asian theaters.
