In 2003 and 2004, the urban line trains ran on the Tsuen Wan line, Island line and Tseung Kwan O line. The K-Stock trains are different from the R-stock trains built by Hyundai Rotem for the East Rail line extension, which were ordered by MTRC on 14 December 2012, as 37 nine-car sets and entered service on the current East Rail line in 2021. A part of the Tung Chung line was built along with the Kap Shui Mun Bridge and the Tsing Ma Bridge. The line currently travels through eight stations in 31 minutes along its route. The line is coloured orange on the map. History In October 1989, the Hong Kong government announced plans to build a new airport on the remote island of Chek Lap Kok to replace the overcrowded Kai Tak International Airport at the heart of Kowloon. As part of the initiative, the government invited the MTR Corporation to build a rail link to the new airport dubbed the Lantau Airport Railway. The project initially saw opposition from the Chinese government as it feared the construction would drain the monetary reserve of the Hong Kong government and leave the Chinese with nothing after the British handed the territory over in 1997. MTR Metro Cammell EMU (DC)
The Metro Cammell EMU (also known as M-Train or Modernisation Train) () is the oldest variation of electric multiple unit that operates on the MTR rapid transit railway system in Hong Kong. A total of 768 cars were built by Metro-Cammell in England (and its successor GEC-Alsthom) between 1977 and 1994, and refurbished from 1998 to 2001 by United Goninan. The 9-car sets are manufactured by Hyundai Rotem for the North South Corridor, an extension of the East Rail line, at a cost of HK$4 billion. 37 trainsets were ordered in December 2012 and the first delivery took place in 2015, while a further 6 trains were ordered in May 2020. Originally scheduled to enter service in late-2017 to early-2018, the trains gradually entered service from 6 February 2021. All train sets were put into service in 2022, replacing the Metro Cammell EMUs and displacing the SP1900 EMUs to the Tuen Ma Line. Formation The formation ranges from D001/D003 (Trainset 1) to D127/D129 (Trainset 43). Like the previous SP1900s and Metro Cammell EMUs, one car is still reserved for the first class in each train set.
