The Northern Route ( bn, নর্দার্ন রুট) is one of the branches of the approved MRT Line 5 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 5 of Dhaka Metro Rail; the other one being the MRT Line 5 (Southern Route), Southern Route. The construction of the Northern Route started in 4 November 2023 and is scheduled to commence operation by 2028. History Development In 2005, the World Bank published a study report, recommending that the government of Bangladesh build a mass transit system in Dhaka. In the same year, American consultancy firm Louis Berger Group prepared a strategic transport plan for Dhaka. The World Bank helped to develop this plan, which proposed the construction of five MRT lines in Dhaka. The five metro lines were MRT Line 1 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 1, MRT Line 2 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 2, MRT Line 4 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 4, MRT Line 5 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 5 and MRT Line 6 (Dhaka Metro), MRT Line 6. Rapid transit or mass rapid transit (MRT), also known as heavy rail or metro, is a type of high-capacity public transport generally found in urban areas. A rapid transit system that primarily or traditionally runs below the surface may be called a subway, tube, or underground. Unlike buses or trams, rapid transit systems are railways (usually electric railway, electric) that operate on an exclusive right-of-way (transportation), right-of-way, which cannot be accessed by pedestrians or other vehicles, and which is often grade-separated in tunnels or on elevated railways.
