MLS College Draft
The MLS SuperDraft is an annual Draft (sports), college draft for teams of Major League Soccer in the United States and Canada. It takes place in January and is used by teams to select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated from college were selected, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were chosen. The draft is divided into three rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last placed team (or expansion teams) getting the first pick. Draft (sports)
A draft is a process used in some countries (especially in North America) and sports (especially in closed leagues) to allocate certain players to teams. In a draft, teams take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract, and no other team in the league may sign the player. The process is similar to round-robin item allocation. The best-known type of draft is the entry draft, which is used to allocate players who have recently become eligible to play in a league. Depending on the sport, the players may come from college, high school or junior teams, or teams in other countries. An entry draft is intended to prevent expensive bidding wars for young talent and to ensure that no team can sign contracts with all of the best young players and make the league uncompetitive. Fort Lauderdale () is a coastal city located in the U.S. state of Florida, north of Miami along the Atlantic Ocean. Steve Shak
Steve Shak (born February 8, 1978 in Cerritos, California) is a retired American soccer player. He currently works for Northwestern Mutual. Previously Shak was an assistant coach with the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Second Division. He also joined the North Carolina State coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 2013. A former UCLA college standout and Major League Soccer number one draft pick, Shak spent four years in the American top league with the MetroStars and with Colorado Rapids, but with the exception of a brief stint in Sweden, spent the majority of his career in the USL, including extended periods with the Virginia Beach Mariners and the Eagles. The 2000 Major League Soccer SuperDraft was held on February 6, 2000 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and consisted of six rounds. One of the most successful draft picks was goalkeeper Nick Rimando, a third round pick, who went on to hold the record for most MLS career shutouts. List Of First Overall MLS Draft Picks
The Major League Soccer SuperDraft's first overall pick is the player who is selected first among all eligible draftees by a team during the annual Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft. The first pick is awarded to the club with the poorest regular season record during the previous MLS campaign. Exceptions are when there is an expansion franchise, where the expansion side has the opportunity to select the first overall draft pick. Two first picks have won the MLS Rookie of the Year award in their maiden season: Maurice Edu and Cyle Larin. No first pick has ever won the Landon Donovan MVP Award, although Alecko Eskandarian is the only first draft pick to win the MLS Cup Most Valuable Player Award. Jason Moore (soccer)
Jason Moore is a retired American soccer midfielder who spent five seasons in Major League Soccer. He was a member of the United States men's national under-17 soccer team which went to the quarterfinals of the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Championship. College Moore attended the University of Virginia where he played two seasons on the men’s soccer team. In 1997, he played as a defender before moving into the midfield for the 1998 season. He was a 1998 Second Team All American. He left college after his sophomore season to turn professional. Professional In February 1999, D.C. Miami Fusion
The Miami Fusion was a professional soccer team based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They played in Major League Soccer (MLS) for four seasons, from 1998 to 2001. Announced in 1997 as one of the league's first two expansion teams, their best season was 2001, when they won the Supporters' Shield with the best regular season finish. In 2002, after four years of lackluster ticket sales and revenues, MLS contracted the Fusion along with its other Florida-based team, the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Leo Cullen (soccer)
Leo Cullen (born February 28, 1976 in Burnsville, Minnesota) is a retired American soccer defender who spent seven seasons in Major League Soccer and earned three caps with the United States men's national soccer team. Player Cullen played college soccer at the University of Maryland from 1994 to 1997. He was the 1997 ACC Player of the Year and a 1997 First-Team All-American. Professional On February 2, 1998, the Miami Fusion made Cullen the first draft pick in team history, taking him first overall in the 1998 MLS College Draft. Colorado Rapids
The Colorado Rapids are an American professional soccer club based in the Denver metropolitan area. The Rapids compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. Founded in 1995, as part of the Anschutz Corporation, later to be a founding sports franchise of the global sports & entertainment juggernaut AEG, the club is a founding member of MLS, playing their first season in 1996. Tahj Jakins
Tahj Jakins (born November 11, 1975 in Salt Lake City, Utah) is a retired American soccer defender who played five seasons in Major League Soccer. Youth Born in Utah, Jakins grew up in southern California, playing for the North Huntington Beach Futbol Club. In 1993, he entered UCLA where he played on the school’s soccer team. In 1996, he earned first team All American recognition. That year, he also played in two games with the U.S. national B-Team, but was never called up to the senior national team.
