METRA Transit System
The Metropolitan (METRA) Transit System is the primary provider of mass transportation in Muscogee County, Georgia, United States. The agency is the successor to the Columbus Transportation Company, a privately owned bus company founded in 1924 that had operated as the primary bus service in Columbus and Phenix City. In 1967, the city of Columbus purchased the Columbus Transportation Company and its assets after the company's bus services became unprofitable, with the city renaming the now public entity the Columbus Transportation System (later renamed METRA). In 1978, METRA assumed certain bus routes to nearby Fort Benning, which had been operated by Howard Bus Lines, a privately owned bus and cab company that ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy in 1978. Currently, ten routes serve the city, providing service Monday through Saturday. Metra is the commuter rail system in the Chicago metropolitan area serving the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs via the Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF Railway, and other railroads. The system operates 242 stations on 11 rail lines. It is the fourth busiest commuter rail system in the United States by ridership and the largest and busiest commuter rail system outside the New York City metropolitan area. History The university was first called Columbus College when it opened as a junior college in a hosiery mill in 1958. Columbus Civic Center is a 10,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Columbus, Georgia, built in 1996. History The arena was built in 1996, along with a Softball Complex, to fully complete South Commons (an area consisting of a baseball and football stadium, and a skateboard park). The venue replaced the Municipal Auditorium, which was constructed in 1955. Peachtree Mall
Peachtree Mall is a shopping mall in Columbus, Georgia. After the closing and demolition of Columbus Square Mall in the early 2000s, Peachtree Mall is the only enclosed shopping center in the city. Peachtree Mall is one of two major shopping areas in Columbus, the other being Columbus Park Crossing. History and layout The original design of the mall was a single-level with anchor stores Gayfers and Montgomery Ward on each end of the primary corridor. A food court was added along with a 3rd anchor store, Parisian in 1985. Fort Moore
Fort Moore was the second of two historic U.S. Military Forts in Los Angeles, California, during the Mexican–American War. It lay straight above the junction of the Hollywood Freeway and Broadway, on an historic hill that once sheltered the old Plaza. The landmark hill took its name, Fort Hill, from the first fort, and the hill afforded sweeping views of the old adobe town and the vineyards in the swale of the Los Angeles River. Fort Hill was a spur of the ridge that runs from the Quarry Hills (Elysian Park) southward to Beaudry’s Bunker Hill; it originally stretched east between 1st Street and Ord Street. Phenix City is a city in Lee and Russell counties in the U.S. state of Alabama, and the county seat of Russell County. As of the 2020 Census, the population of the city was 38,817.
