Tumelo Kepadisa (born 2 May 1981), simply known as Tuks Senganga or Tuks, is a South African motswako rapper born in Mafikeng, in the former homeland of the Bophuthatswana. He frequently performs in ethnic languages, though mostly Setswana. Tuks Senganga started writing in 1993, drawing inspiration from everyday issues in his immediate environment. His career took off in 2005 with his first album '' Mafoko A Me''. This was the album that earned him the Best Hip Hop Album Award at the 12th Annual MTN South African Music Awards (SAMA). Career A fellow Motswako artist once said "poetry is both lyric and content; one without the other can never be on point". Motswako
Motswako is a Southern African subgenre of hip hop popular in South Africa. It consists of a mix of rap lyrics in both the local language (Setswana) and English layered on a steady beat. Other languages used include Sesotho, Zulu and Afrikaans as per the rapper's origin. The genre gained popularity in the late nineties as South African acts like HHP and Baphixile (consisting of "Prof" and "Blax Myth") started rapping in Setswana, resulting in an increased following from the local population. Because of its reputation in South Africa most of the upcoming artists use this genre as a base before they start their music careers because of its basic principles, a good motswako artist have to learn the creative writing skills used to perfect the genre making it easy to learn and write music. South African Music Awards
The South African Music Awards (often simply the SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held annually, usually in late April or May, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The show has mostly been held at the Super Bowl in Sun City, with the exception of three years, and broadcast live on national broadcaster, SABC. ''Mafoko A Me'' is the debut studio album of South African hip hop artist Tuks, released in 2005 in South Africa. Critical reception MIO ''Mafoko A Me'' garnered positive reviews. With ''MIO'' giving an overall score of 8/10, stating that: " Thabiso "Thaso" Tsotetsi and Code Jack, the intro – “Manifesto” knocked the wind out of me with its power, what a pity it was only an intro and not a full track. Vice Versa, with its hard core Setswana lyrics played on my sentiments at just the right time and I liked the beats of the track titled “The Need” , but “Let Live” tune...haai bafoethu, this boy is talented. Gravy Train, hit me left, right and center and again the tone of this track kept me nodding my head up and down in affirmation. Though I am not a Tswana boy, “Mona” got me interested, even influencing me to memorise the lyrics. Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) is a trade association representing the interests of major and independent record labels of South Africa. Located in Randburg, RISA is responsible for running the annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and for music recording certification in South Africa. It also runs The Official South African Charts (TOSAC). Anti-piracy RISA is the body that represents musicians and publishers when it comes to copyright.
