M1 15
The M1 15 is the oldest preserved electrical tram in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was built in 1902 by ASEA and is one of the first electrical trams in Gothenburg. The tram has been restored to the same appearance it had between 1902 and 1906. The tram has open platforms and the cabin is equipped with ceiling lights, curtains, and long benches on the sides. History Prior to the electrification of the Gothenburg tram network, Göteborgs Spårvägar AB ordered 46 electric trams from ASEA. These were all delivered in 1902. Between 1912 and 1916 all M1 trams were rebuilt to M4 trams with built-in platforms. The M1 15 was rebuilt in 1914 and was used as an M4 tram for seven years. From 15 February 1921 it was used as a trailer car. It was not rebuilt, but the bow collector was lowered and the engine disengaged. The Gothenburg tramway network ( sv, Göteborgs spårvägar) is part of the public transport system organised by Göteborgs Spårvägar, controlled by Västtrafik in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The system's approximately of single track — making it the largest tram network in Northern Europe — is used by around 200 trams , which serve twelve day-time and five night-time lines with a combined line length of 190 km. These figures are expected to increase when the second stage of ''Kringen'' (short for ''Kollektivringen'', the public transport ring) is finished. Liseberg
Liseberg is an amusement park located in Gothenburg, Sweden, that opened in 1923. It is one of the most visited amusement parks in Scandinavia, attracting about three million visitors annually. Among the noteworthy attractions is the wooden roller coaster Balder, twice (2003 and 2005) voted as the ''Best Wooden Tracked Roller Coaster'' in the world in a major international poll. The park itself has also been chosen as one of the top ten amusement parks in the world (2005) by ''Forbes'' magazine. Saltholmen, Gothenburg
Saltholmen is a peninsula on the southern shore of Älvsborgsfjorden in the district of Älvsborg in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was originally an island, but during the construction of the Gothenburg tram network a connection was made to the mainland. The connection has since been widened to accommodate car parking, making Saltholmen effectively a peninsula. History The company Aktiebolag Långedrag was founded in 1903, which was supposed to renovate the area from Långedrag to Saltholmen, including constructing a swimming area on Saltholmen. The tram network was extended to Saltholmen from 1906 to 1908. The original plans were not realised, but from 1906 to 1908 a warm bathing area, a cold bathing area and a restaurant were built. Bow Collector
A bow collector is one of the three main devices used on tramcars to transfer electric current from the wires above to the tram below. While once very common in continental Europe, it was replaced by the pantograph or the trolley pole, itself often later replaced by the pantograph. Origins When the bow collector was first conceived by German inventor Ernst Werner von Siemens in the late 1880s, American inventor Frank J. Sprague of Virginia had just patented his trolley pole system of current collection from an overhead wire. To avoid contravening this patent, the Siemens company was forced to design its own, unique form of current collection, namely the bow collector.
