''M12,'' aka M12 STUDIO, is an American artist collective and non-profit organization based in Colorado that features an evolving group of artist practitioners, curators, and designers. Together they create artworks, research projects, and education programs that explore rural cultures and landscapes. Initially formed as the ''municipalWORKSHOP'' in 2002 in York, Alabama by Richard Saxton when he was an artist-in-residence at the Rural Studio, an architecture studio run by Auburn University, the group evolved into M12 in 2007 when it became incorporated as a non-profit organization. Stuart Hyatt
Stuart Hyatt is an American musician and multimedia artist. Biography Early life Stuart Hyatt was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 18, 1974. Between the ages of 3 to 10, Hyatt was trained in playing the violin according to the Suzuki method. At age 10, when the violin instructor started to introduce reading sheet music, Hyatt lost interest in further lessons. Hyatt attended the Broad Ripple High School for the Arts and Humanities, located in Indianapolis. A fellow student at the school lent a 4-track cassette recorder to Hyatt, whereupon Hyatt started recording music in layers and experimenting with sound. Education Hyatt studied Visual Arts at Eckerd College in St. Petersberg, Florida, where he graduated in 1997. He then obtained a master's degree in Fine Arts at Indiana University. York, Alabama
York is a city in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. Founded around 1838 after the merging of two communities, Old Anvil and New York Station, the latter a station on a stagecoach line. The rail came through in the 1850s and later, the "New" was dropped from York Station in 1861. With the discovery that another community in Alabama bore that name, the "Station" was dropped and York was formally incorporated on April 6, 1881. Rural Studio
The Rural Studio is a design-build architecture studio run by Auburn University. It aims to teach students about the social responsibilities of the profession of architecture while also providing safe, well-constructed and inspirational homes and buildings for poor communities in rural west Alabama, part of the so-called " Black Belt". The studio was founded in 1993 by architects Samuel Mockbee and D. K. Ruth. It is led by UK-born architect Andrew Freear. Each year the program builds several projects - a house by the third-year students and two to three thesis projects by groups of 3-5 fifth-year students.
