M. H. Hoffman
Maurice Henry Hoffman (March 21, 1881 – March 6, 1944) was an American studio owner and film producer. In the 1920s and 30s, Hoffman made films for seven different studios. He is particularly associated with Poverty Row where studios he founded - Allied Pictures, Liberty Pictures and Tiffany Pictures produced mainly low-budget B pictures. Early years Born in Chicago on March 20, 1881, Hoffman earned a Bachelor of Law degree in 1900 from New York University. He was admitted to the bar in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts and practiced law until 1910. Studio years From 1910 to 1917, Hoffman was general manager of the Universal Film Company, a film exchange in New England. He resigned in 1917 to independently produce and distribute pictures. In 1920 Hoffman co-founded Tiffany Pictures (later Tiffany-Stahl Pictures) in Hollywood with Mae Murray and her then-husband, Robert Z. Leonard. Lila Lee (born Augusta Wilhelmena Fredericka Appel; July 25, 1905 – November 13, 1973) was a prominent screen actress, primarily a leading lady, of the silent film and early sound film eras. Early life The daughter of Augusta Fredericka Appel and Carl Appel, Lee was born Augusta Wilhelmena Fredericka Appel on July 25, 1905, in Union Hill, New Jersey (now part of Union City), into a middle-class family of German immigrants who relocated to New York City. She had an older sister, Pauline ("Peggy"), who was born in Hamburg, Germany. Searching for a hobby for their gregarious young daughter, the Appels enrolled Lila in Gus Edwards' kiddie review shows where she was given the nickname of "Cuddles"; a name that she would be known by for the rest of her acting career. Plot The film looks at the exploits of chorus girls Marie (Mae Busch) and Helen (Duane Thompson) who have dedicated themselves to finding and marrying millionaire husbands. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Bruce Taylor arrives at town with his dog Rex, horse Blackie, and a baby he found in the desert. He takes care of the infant and falls in love with Molly Markham, whose grandfather is under the financial power of Obediah Dillwater, suitor for Molly's hand. Molly helps Bruce out with the baby. Obediah has him arrested on a charge of kidnaping the infant. He escapes from jail with the aid of Rex and Blackie.
