M. G. M. Pryor
Mark Gillachrist Marlborough Pryor (25 February 1915 – 19 October 1970) was a British biologist, who was Senior Tutor and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Pryor was the middle son of Lt. Col. Walter Marlborough Pryor and his wife Ethne Philippa (née Moore), the daughter of Sir Norman Moore, 1st Baronet. His paternal grandfather was Marlborough Robert Pryor, who was an amateur naturalist "well known in Cambridge scientific circles". He was educated, per family tradition, at Eton College, Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked as a research student under A.D. Imms. Pryor married Sophie Raverat, daughter of the late French artist Jacques Raverat and his wife Gwen Raverat, Gwendolen Mary (née Darwin) (a granddaughter of Charles Darwin), in 1940. Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge
Trinity College Chapel is the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Part of a complex of Grade I listed buildings at Trinity, it dates from the mid 16th century. It is an Anglican church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Building and architecture The chapel was begun in 1554–55 by order of Queen Mary and was completed in 1567 by her half-sister, Elizabeth I. The architectural style is Tudor-Gothic, with Perpendicular tracery and pinnacles. The roof is of an earlier style than the rest of the building, and may have been re-used from the chapel of King’s Hall, the college which preceded Trinity on this site. Only the walls and roof are of Tudor date, but the walls were re-faced in ashlar in the 19th-century and present slate roof-covering is modern. A persistent vegetative state (PVS) or post-coma unresponsiveness (PCU) is a disorder of consciousness in which patients with severe brain damage are in a state of partial arousal rather than true awareness. After four weeks in a vegetative state (VS), the patient is classified as being in a persistent vegetative state. This diagnosis is classified as a permanent vegetative state some months (three in the US and six in the UK) after a non-traumatic brain injury or one year after a traumatic injury. The term unresponsive wakefulness syndrome may be alternatively used, as "vegetative state" has some negative connotations among the public. Michael Meredith Swann, Baron Swann, FRS, FRSE (1 March 1920 – 22 September 1990) was a British molecular and cell biologist. He was appointed chairman of the BBC, awarded a knighthood and subsequently a life peerage. Early life Swann was born in Cambridge, the eldest of three children of pathologist Meredith Blake Robson Swann and his wife, Marjorie Dykes. Laurence Picken
Laurence Ernest Rowland Picken (16 July 1909 – 16 March 2007) was an ethnomusicologist and scientist. He had a wide research interest, and published works on cytology, biochemistry, musicology, Turkish musical instruments, and ancient Chinese and Japanese music. John Tileston Edsall (3 November 1902 – 12 June 2002) was a protein scientist, who contributed significantly to the understanding of the hydrophobic interaction. Early life Born in Philadelphia, John Edsall moved to Boston with his family at the age of 10. He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in chemistry. At Harvard he was a good friend of the physicist Robert Oppenheimer. He wrote an account of his life and career in a review. Protein research Edsall worked with Edwin Cohn during World War II to apply protein methods to blood fractionation. Norman De Bruyne
Norman Adrian de Bruyne FRS was born in Punta Arenas Chile on 8 November 1904, and baptised on 19 March 1905 at the Anglican St. James Church, by the Rev. Edwin Aspinall.
