"M.V.P." is a song recorded by American rapper Big L. The song was written by Big L and produced by Lord Finesse for Big L's debut studio album ''Lifestylez ov da Poor and Dangerous''. It was released in 1995 through Columbia Records as the second single from the album along with a "Summer Smooth Mix" featuring singer/songwriter Indoe. The original version samples " Stay With Me" by DeBarge. The acronym M.V.P. usually stands for 'most valuable player' in sports and e-sports settings. In the song, however, Big L takes it to stand for "most valuable poet". 4 remixes for the song exist: the Summer Smooth mix featuring Miss Jones and produced by Giovanni Salah, two remixes produced by Buckwild, both appearing on his 2007 album Buckwild: Diggin' in the Crates, and a remix by DJ Premier. Lamont Coleman (May 30, 1974February 15, 1999), known professionally as Big L, was an American rapper and record executive. Emerging from Harlem in New York City in 1992, Coleman became known among underground hip-hop fans for his freestyling ability. He was eventually signed to Columbia Records, where, in 1995, he released his debut album, '' Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous''. On February 15, 1999, Coleman was shot nine times in his East Harlem neighborhood and later died from his injuries. Noted for his use of wordplay, writers at AllMusic, HipHopDX and ''The Source'' have praised Coleman for his lyrical ability, He has also been described as "one of the most auspicious storytellers in hip-hop history and known by many as the greatest punchline rapper of all time." Christopher Edward Martin (born March 21, 1966), known professionally as DJ Premier (also known as Preemo), is an American record producer and DJ. He is considered one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time. He was half of the hip hop duo Gang Starr—alongside the rapper Guru—and presently forms half of the hip hop duo PRhyme, together with Royce da 5'9". Early life Christopher Edward Martin was born in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas on March 21, 1966. He was then raised in Prairie View, Texas, before moving to Brooklyn, New York, during his teenage years. Genius is an American digital media company founded on August 27, 2009, by Tom Lehman, Ilan Zechory, and Mahbod Moghadam. The site allows users to provide annotations and interpretation to song lyrics, news stories, sources, poetry, and documents.
