M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust
The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust is a private, non-profit foundation based in Vancouver, Washington. History Following the 1971 death of Tektronix co-founder Jack Murdock, $90 million from his estate was transferred to a charitable foundation which, in 1975, became the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. The Trust was initially overseen by Tektronix General Counsel James B. Castles, attorney Paul L. Boley, and Walter P. Dyke as trustees, with Sam C. Smith appointed as its first CEO. The Trust is led by executive director Steve Moore and a board of three trustees: Jeff Grubb, Jeff Pinneo, and John W. Castles (son of James B. Castles). Melvin Jack Murdock
Melvin "Jack" Murdock (August 15, 1917 – May 16, 1971) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and radio technician from Portland, Oregon. He was a co-founder of Tektronix, Inc. Background Murdock was born in Portland, Oregon, on August 15, 1917. Upon graduating from Franklin High School, Murdock’s father offered him a choice of financing for college, or for a business. Murdock opened "Murdock Radio and Appliance Company" in 1935 in southeast Portland, where, in 1936, Howard Vollum began working as a radio technician in the back of the shop. Murdock served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Tektronix, Inc.
