''Lytton'' was a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Arrow Lakes and the Columbia River in southeastern British Columbia and northeastern Washington from 1890 to 1904. Design and construction ''Lytton'' was built at Revelstoke, British Columbia. She was the first vessel constructed for the newly formed Columbia and Kootenay Steam Navigation Company. Construction began in December 1889, but winter ice conditions forced a suspension of work until April 1890. Alexander Watson, a veteran shipbuilder, supervised the construction, for which he had recruited a crew of carpenters from Victoria, British Columbia. The engines for Lytton were second-hand, coming from the steamer '' Gertrude'' which ran on the Stikine and lower Fraser rivers from 1875 to 1887. ''Lytton'' was a typical Columbia River steamer. The Northern Pacific Railway was a transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the western United States, from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. Sir Francis Stillman Barnard (May 16, 1856 – April 11, 1936) was a Canadian parliamentarian and the tenth Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Barnard is often referred to as Frank Barnard, as was his father Francis Jones Barnard, who as the founder of Barnard's Express, was one of BC's more notable pioneer entrepreneurs. ''Kootenai'' was a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Arrow Lakes in British Columbia from 1885 to 1895. ''Kootenai'' was the second sternwheeler to run on the Arrow Lakes. This vessel should not be confused with the similarly named SS Kootenay, ''Kootenay'', an 1897 sternwheeler that also ran on the Arrow Lakes. Design and construction The firm of Paquet & Smith (shipbuilders), Paquet & Smith built the vessel's frames in Portland, Oregon of Douglas fir. The frames were then shipped to the Little Dalles (now known as Northport, Washington, Northport), in the Washington Territory on the Columbia River near the border with British Columbia. The Columbia and Kootenay Railway (C&KR) was a historic railway operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. Bonnington Falls
Bonnington Falls were waterfalls submerged by dams on the Kootenay River between the cities of Castlegar and Nelson, in the West Kootenay region of southern British Columbia. The upper falls was named after the Falls of Clyde upper falls of Bonnington Linn. In 1896, West Kootenay Power and Light constructed a dam and hydro generating station at the lower falls. At the time, the high voltage line to the Rossland mines was the longest in the world. In 1908, the City of Nelson hydro dam at the upper falls became operational.
