Luis Zuloaga
Luis Zuloaga (December 31, 1922 – May 23, 2013) was a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher. Born in Valencia, Carabobo, Zuloaga was a left-handed curveball specialist. He started to be known as El Mono when he entered the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League in its inaugural season of 1946. It was a moniker that he proudly used throughout his life. Previously, Zuloaga pitched for the Cervecería Caracas of the First Division from 1942 through 1945, then moved with the team when it relocated to the new circuit in 1946. He spent his entire career with the franchise, including when it was called the Leones del Caracas, pitching in the league until the 1955–1956 season. In addition, Zuloaga represented the Venezuela national team in the Baseball World Cup in 1944 and 1945, leading his team to win Gold medal at both championships. Alonzo Perry
Alonzo Thomas Perry (April 14, 1923 - October 13, 1982) was a professional baseball first baseman and pitcher in the Negro leagues and in the Mexican League. He played from 1940 to 1963 with several teams. The power hitter was indirectly responsible for the discovery of Willie Mays. Scouts sent to see Perry recognized the super talent of his younger teammate and signed both of them, assigning Perry to AAA ball. He never played an entire season at this level, and his two short stints with top level minor-league clubs were too brief to be conclusive. 1949 Caribbean Series
The 1949 Caribbean Series was the first edition of the Caribbean Series (''Serie del Caribe''). It was held from February 20 through February 25 with the champion baseball teams of Cuba, Alacranes del Almendares; Panama, Spur Cola Colonites; Puerto Rico, Indios de Mayagüez and Venezuela, Cervecería Caracas. A base on balls (BB), also known as a walk, occurs in baseball when a batter receives four pitches that the umpire calls '' balls'', and is in turn awarded first base without the possibility of being called out. Patriotas De Venezuela
The Patriotas de Venezuela baseball club was a founding member of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League in its inaugural season of 1946. Team history The Patriotas, based in Caracas, played its home games at the now-extinct Estadio Cerveza Caracas, while appearing in nine seasons spanning 1946–1955. The team was also nicknamed the Criollos for a while. The VPBL opening game was realized on January 12, 1946. Besides Venezuela, the circuit included the Cervecería Caracas, Navegantes del Magallanes, and Sabios de Vargas teams. The Patriotas were owned and established by Juan Antonio Yanes, one of the early pioneers of professional baseball in the country, who also managed his team in parts of two seasons. Max Surkont
Matthew Constantine Surkont (June 16, 1922 – October 8, 1986) was an American professional baseball pitcher who played from 1949 through 1957 in the Major Leagues. He played for the Chicago White Sox, Boston / Milwaukee Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Giants. The nickname ''Max'' was given to him by his childhood friends. Don Newcombe
Donald Newcombe (June 14, 1926 – February 19, 2019), nicknamed "Newk", was an American professional baseball pitcher in Negro league and Major League Baseball who played for the Newark Eagles (1944–45), Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1949–1951 and 1954–58), Cincinnati Reds (1958–1960), and Cleveland Indians (1960). Newcombe was the first pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Cy Young Awards during his career.
