Lueshe
The Lueshe mine, or Lweshe mine, is a niobium mine located in Rutshuru Territory in North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The site is one of the most economically significant pyrochlore deposits in the world. The rare niobium mineral was discovered at the mine, and is named after it. The mine is frequently caught up in violence surrounding the Kivu conflict. History Early history The mineral Lueshite was discovered at Lueshe in 1959, by Alexandre Safiannikoff. Safiannikoff was a Russian-born Belgian geologist, who worked for the Belgian Compagnie Minière des Grands-Lacs. The joint venture ''Société Minière de Lueshe'' (SOMINLU), founded by Somikubi and Union Carbide, was created in 1960 to prospect the site. Pyrochlore () is a mineral group of the niobium end member of the pyrochlore supergroup. The general formula, (where A and B are metals), represent a family of phases isostructural to the mineral pyrochlore. Pyrochlores are an important class of materials in diverse technological applications such as luminescence, ionic conductivity, nuclear waste immobilization, high temperature thermal barrier coatings, automobile exhaust gas control, catalysts, solid oxide fuel cell, ionic/electrical conductors etc. Occurrence The mineral is associated with the metasomatic end stages of magmatic intrusions. Alexandre Safiannikoff
Alexandre Safiannikoff (1903—1988) was a Belgian geologist of Russian descent. Early life and military career Safiannikoff was a descendant of a family involved in the Imperial Russian Army. He was born in Dalian, Russian Empire, and joined the army of admiral Alexander Kolchak in Omsk, where he fought against the revolutionary troops. In 1920, he was incorporated into the Naval Academy in Vladivostok. In 1922, he became an officer, and moved to France, where he obtained degrees in sciences at the University of Paris in 1926, and geological engineering at the University of Nancy in 1927. Career in Africa Between 1929 and 1931, a French company charged him with prospecting in Chad, Ubangui-Shari, and French Equatorial Africa. Afterwards, he went to the Belgian Congo to work for the Empain group of Baron Empain. Eventually, he became the administrative director of the Compagnie Minière des Grands-Lacs. FARDC
The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (french: Forces armées de la république démocratique du Congo ARDC is the state organisation responsible for defending the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The FARDC was rebuilt patchily as part of the peace process which followed the end of the Second Congo War in July 2003. The majority of FARDC members are land forces, but it also has a small air force and an even smaller navy. In 2010–2011 the three services may have numbered between 144,000 and 159,000 personnel. In addition, there is a presidential force called the Republican Guard, but it and the Congolese National Police (PNC) are not part of the Armed Forces. The National Congress for the Defence of the People (french: Congrès national pour la défense du peuple, CNDP) is a political armed militia established by Laurent Nkunda in the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in December 2006. The CNDP was engaged in the Kivu conflict, an armed conflict against the military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In January 2009, the CNDP split and Nkunda was arrested by the Rwanda government. The remaining CNDP splinter faction, led by Bosco Ntaganda, was planned to be integrated into the national army. The Land Forces (french: Forces Terrestres), also called the Congolese Army, are the land warfare component and the largest branch of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). The current Congolese army has its origins in the ''Force Publique'' that was active in the Belgian Congo, which was renamed the Congolese National Army (''Armée nationale congolaise'', ANC) when the country gained independence from Belgium in 1960. Mai Mai
The term Mai-Mai or Mayi-Mayi refers to any kind of community-based militia group active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that is formed to defend local communities and territory against other armed groups. Most were formed to resist the invasion of Rwandan forces and Rwanda-affiliated Congolese rebel groups, but some may have formed to exploit the war to their own advantage by looting, cattle rustling or banditry. Groups that fall under the umbrella term "Mai-Mai" include armed forces led by warlords, traditional tribal elders, village heads and politically motivated resistance fighters. Because Mai Mai have only the most tenuous internal cohesion, different Mai-Mai groups allied themselves with a variety of domestic and foreign government and guerrilla groups at different times. Laurent Nkunda
Laurent Nkunda (or Laurent Nkundabatware Mihigo (birth name), or Laurent Nkunda Batware, or as he prefers to be called The Chairman; born February 2, 1967) is a former General in the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is the former warlord (leader of a rebel faction) operating in the province of Nord-Kivu, sympathetic to Congolese Tutsis and the Tutsi-dominated government of neighbouring Rwanda. Goma
Goma is the capital of North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, next to the Rwandan city of Gisenyi. The lake and the two cities are in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift system. Goma lies only south of the active Nyiragongo Volcano. The recent history of Goma has been dominated by the volcano and the Rwandan genocide of 1994, which in turn fuelled the First and Second Congo Wars. The aftermath of these events was still having effects on the city and its surroundings in 2010.
