Luck (2003 Film)
''Luck'' is a 2003 Canadian romantic comedy film written and directed by Peter Wellington. Set in 1972 against the backdrop of the Canada-Russia Summit Series hockey competition, the film stars Luke Kirby as Shane, a man who falls into a gambling addiction after being turned down by his love interest Margaret (Sarah Polley), but concocts a plan to bet heavily on the hockey games in the hopes of both paying off his gambling debt and winning Margaret back. The film's cast also includes Noam Jenkins, Jed Rees, Sergio Di Zio, Peter MacNeill and Fiona Reid. The film premiered at the 2003 Montreal World Film Festival. It was subsequently screened at the 2004 South by Southwest festival, where it won the award for best narrative competition feature. Sergio Di Zio is a Canadian actor. He starred in the television series '' Flashpoint'' as Michelangelo "Spike" Scarlatti until the show concluded on December 13, 2012. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents one or more annual awards for the Best Screenplay for a Canadian film. Originally presented in 1968 as part of the Canadian Film Awards, from 1980 until 2012 the award continued as part of the Genie Awards ceremony. As of 2013, it is presented as part of the Canadian Screen Awards. Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations.
