Lucien Dubuc
Lucien Dubuc (November 29, 1877 – March 5, 1956) was a lawyer, judge and briefly a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. Early life Lucien Dubuc's father was Joseph Dubuc who was a prominent Canadian federal and provincial politician as well a pioneer lawyer. Political career Dubuc ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the Peace River provincial electoral district as an Independent in the 1905 Alberta general election. He defeated Liberal candidate James Cornwall by an unknown number of votes. The election however was overturned by the provincial cabinet due to significant irregularities and even going so far as to question whether the vote was held at all. Dubuc took the matter to court to force the Executive council to recognize the results and prevent the calling of a new election. Peace River (provincial Electoral District)
Peace River is a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. The district is mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting. The district used instant-runoff voting from 1926 to 1957. It is one of two Alberta districts in operation since the birth of the province (alongside St. Albert). Thomas Allan "Allie" Brick (January 2, 1867 – April 25, 1938) was a Canadian politician and farmer from Alberta. Early life Thomas Allen Brick was born on January 2, 1867, in Compton, Quebec to Anglican missionary John Gough Brick and his wife Emma Marie Brick. Brick was educated in Toronto and married Nancy Jane Gray on May 18, 1895, and together had three children. Brick was a pioneer farmer who is largely credited with bringing grain farming to the northern Alberta. Joseph Dubuc
Sir Joseph Dubuc (26 December 1840 – 7 January 1914), was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and judge who was born in Lower Canada and became an important political figure from Manitoba. Early life Dubuc was from a large family and was irregularly in school because of family responsibilities. He spent some time in the United States and learned English while working in a factory. Upon returning to Quebec, he completed military school in Montreal in November 1866. He further engaged in formal studies, latterly at the Petit Séminaire de Montreal, where he made friends with Louis Riel. This connection would shape his political life in the future. He received a Bachelor of Common Law degree from McGill College in 1869 and was called to the Lower Canada bar the same year. 1905 Alberta General Election
The 1905 Alberta general election was the first general election held in the Province of Alberta, Canada on November 9, 1905, to elect twenty-five members of the Alberta legislature to the 1st Alberta Legislative Assembly, shortly after the province was created out of the Northwest Territories on September 1, 1905. The Alberta Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander C. Rutherford won twenty-three of the twenty-five seats in the new legislature, defeating the Conservative Party, which was led by a young lawyer, Richard Bennett, who later served as Prime Minister of Canada. The election was held using the first past the post system. The number of seats won by the Liberals was far above its portion of the popular vote. James Cornwall
Lieutenant-Colonel James Kennedy "Peace River Jim" Cornwall (October 29, 1869 – November 20, 1955) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1913 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. Business career Cornwall was a founding member of the Northern Transportation Company which grew out of the Northern Traders Company. He served as the company's first President. The company operated fleets of steamboats and barge-towing tugboats on the Mackenzie River system.
