Polyporaceae
The Polyporaceae are a family of poroid fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota. The flesh of their fruit bodies varies from soft (as in the case of the dryad's saddle illustrated) to very tough. Most members of this family have their hymenium (fertile layer) in vertical pores on the underside of the caps, but some of them have gills (e.g. ''Panus'') or gill-like structures (such as ''Daedaleopsis'', whose elongated pores form a corky labyrinth). Many species are brackets, but others have a definite stipe – for example, '' Polyporus badius''. Most of these fungi have white spore powder but members of the genus '' Abundisporus'' have colored spores and produce yellowish spore prints. Cystidia are absent. Josiah Lincoln Lowe
Josiah Lincoln Lowe (13 February 1905 – 30 April 1997) was an American mycologist who specialized in the study of polypores. Lowe was born in Hopewell, New Jersey, where he attended primary school and high school. In 1927, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, and he received a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1938, with Calvin H. Kauffman and Edwin Butterworth Mains as his main academic supervisors. His doctoral thesis was entitled ''The genus ''Lecidea'' in the Adirondack Mountains of New York''. That year, he started his academic career at the College of Forestry, a position he held for almost 40 years. He retired in 1975 and became an emeritus professor. Lowe was the president of the Mycological Society of America in 1960. In the 1980s, Lowe was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease; he died in Syracuse. Fungi
A fungus ( : fungi or funguses) is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. Polypore
Polypores are a group of fungi that form large fruiting bodies with pores or tubes on the underside (see Delimitation for exceptions). They are a morphological group of basidiomycetes-like gilled mushrooms and hydnoid fungi, and not all polypores are closely related to each other. Polypores are also called bracket fungi or shelf fungi, and they characteristically produce woody, shelf- or bracket-shaped or occasionally circular fruiting bodies that are called conks. Most polypores inhabit tree trunks or branches consuming the wood, but some soil-inhabiting species form mycorrhiza with trees. Polypores and the related corticioid fungi are the most important agents of wood decay, playing a very significant role in nutrient cycling and aiding carbon dioxide absorption by forest ecosystems.
