Low Tauern
The Lower TauernThe New Encyclopædia Britannica, Vol. 1, 2003, p. 86. or Niedere Tauern () are a mountain range of the Central Eastern Alps, in the Austrian states of Salzburg and Styria. For the etymology of the name, see Tauern. Geography The range forms a part of the main chain of the Alps. The highest peak of the Lower Tauern is the Hochgolling, part of the Schladming Tauern, at 2,863 m (9,393 ft). Important mountain pass roads include Radstädter Tauern Pass (), Sölk Pass (), and Triebener Tauern Pass (). The range is also crossed by the Tauern Autobahn (A10) through the Tauern Road Tunnel. Borders In the west and south the ''Murtörl'' mountain pass and the River Mur separate them from the Hohe Tauern mountain range, while in the east and north the River Enns and the Schober Pass marks the border to the Northern Limestone Alps. Tauern Road Tunnel
The Tauern Road Tunnel is located on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. The use is subject to a toll. With a length of (4.07 miles), the tunnel ranks as one of the longest frequently-travelled road tunnels in Austria. Location The tunnel crosses under the Radstadt Tauern range, the westernmost part of the larger Low Tauern group. The north portal is in the municipality of Flachau in St. Johann im Pongau District (''Pongau'' region), while the southern entrance is in Zederhaus in the Salzburg district of Tamsweg (''Lungau''). The nearby Radstädter Tauern Pass, about to the east, has historically been a possible crossing point of the Alpine crest. A nearby historic adit in the Schladming Tauern at a height of , connecting the present-day states of Salzburg and Styria, originates from medieval times when zinc, silver, cobalt and lead were mined here. Großer Bösenstein
Großer Bösenstein (2,448 m) is a mountain of the Lower Tauern in Styria, Austria. It is located near the village of Hohentauern, which is the starting point for most climbs, and is the third highest mountain of the Rottenmann and Wölz Tauern sub-range. Weißeck
The Weißeck () is the highest mountain in the Radstadt Tauern range in Austria and is popular, both as a ski touring destination in winter and a climbing peak in summer. It gets its name (which means "white corner") from the mighty block of light-coloured Wetterstein dolomite of which the mountain is made. The summit of the Weißeck is located on the municipal boundary between Muhr, in the national park, and Zederhaus, in the nature park. Bases for tours to the Weißeck are, on one side, the Riedingtal valley in Zederhaus, and, on the other, the Stickler Hut (1,752 m) in the upper Mur valley. The normal route from the Rieding gap along the western ridge to the top is signed and only requires a little sure-footedness, but is generally an easy climbing grade. Boundary and divisions The Seckau Tauern are the easternmost part of the Low Tauern; they are bounded by the valleys of the Ingeringbach and Liesing streams. Their name comes from the village of Seckau, which lies 5 km north of Knittelfeld and is known for its Benedictine monastery. The northwestern part of the range is also called the Trieben Tauern (''Triebener Tauern''). The pass known as the Triebener Tauern runs over this section from Trieben to Judenburg. Radstadt Tauern
The Radstadt Tauern (german: Radstädter Tauern) are a subrange of the Central Eastern Alps in Austria. Together with the Schladming Tauern, the Rottenmann and Wölz Tauern and the Seckau Tauern the Radstadt Tauern form the major range of mountains known as the Low Tauern. The mountains are found in the southeast of the Austrian state of Salzburg, between the upper reaches of the Enns and Mur rivers. Geography Location The Radstadt Tauern form the westernmost part of the Low Tauern range. They are bounded to the southwest by the High Tauern, to the northwest by the Salzburg Pongau region, and to the east by the Schladming Tauern. Their name is derived from the historic town of Radstadt in the Enns valley. Alpine Club Classification Of The Eastern Alps
The Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps (german: Alpenvereinseinteilung der Ostalpen, AVE) is a common division of the Eastern Alps into 75 mountain ranges, based on the Moriggl Classification (ME) first published in 1924 by the German and Austrian Alpine Club. The present-day division established for the German-speaking world (less Switzerland) was compiled by the German, Austrian and South Tyrol Alpine Clubs and published in 1984 and is also used for the basic numbering of Alpine Club maps for mountaineering. Classification system The Eastern Alps are divided into four main areas: the Northern Limestone Alps, the Central Eastern Alps, the Southern Limestone Alps, and the Western Limestone Alps. The Northern Limestone Alps (german: Nördliche Kalkalpen), also called the Northern Calcareous Alps, are the ranges of the Eastern Alps north of the Central Eastern Alps located in Austria and the adjacent Bavarian lands of southeastern Germany. The distinction from the latter group, where the higher peaks are located, is based on differences in geological composition.
