Love In The Dark (play)
''Love In The Dark; Or, The Man of Bus'ness'' is a 1675 comedy play by the English writer Francis Fane. It was first staged by the King's Company at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. The epilogue was written by the Earl of Rochester, and may also have contributed some of the more libertine lines to the play. It is set in Venice. The original Drury Lane cast included Edward Lydall as Loredano, Nicholas Burt as Cardinal Colonna, William Cartwright as Hircanio, Philip Griffin as Grimani, William Wintershall as Cornanti, John Lacy as Intrigo, Edward Kynaston as Count Sforza, Michael Mohun as Tribultio, Joseph Haines as Visconti, Martin Powell as Proveditor, Elizabeth James as Aurana and Elizabeth Boutell Elizabeth Boutell (early 1650s?—1715), was a British actress. Francis Fane (dramatist)
Sir Francis Fane, KB, (died 1691) of Fulbeck, in Lincolnshire, was a writer of stage plays and poems and a courtier in the Restoration court of Charles II of England. Biography Fane was the eldest son of Sir Francis Fane (c. 1611–1680)., citing: will registered in P. C. C. 91, North. Fane the younger was created a Knight of the Bath in 1661 at the coronation of Charles II. Fane and some partners were financiers for a project to drain Eight Hundred Fen, near Boston, Lincolnshire. He ran up substantial debts which he hoped to reduce by the sale of Firbeck Manor in Yorkshire. He petitioned Parliament to pass an act allowing him to do so as it had been settled on his wife and their sons. By his father's will dated 7 June 1679 he inherited the sum of £1800, the majority of his late father's estate. William Wintershall
William Wintershall (died July 1679), also Wintersall or Wintersell, was a noted seventeenth-century English actor. His career spanned the difficult years of mid-century, when English theatres were closed from 1642 to 1660, during the English Civil War and the Interregnum. According to James Wright's ''Historia Histrionica'' (1699), Wintershall's career began in the final years of the period of English Renaissance theatre; he was likely a young member of Queen Henrietta's Men at the Salisbury Court Theatre in the 1637–42 years. During the theatre closure, 1642–60, Wintershall was one of the English actors who performed in Europe, mainly in The Hague and Paris, in the middle 1640s. Wintershall became involved in a lawsuit with fellow actor Andrew Cane in 1654. Elizabeth Boutell
Elizabeth Boutell (early 1650s?—1715), was a British actress. Life She joined, soon after its formation, the company at the Theatre Royal, subsequently known as Drury Lane, and was accordingly one of the first women to appear on the English stage. Her earliest recorded appearance took place presumably in 1663 or 1664, as Estifania in ''Rule a Wife and Have a Wife''. She joined the King's Company about 1670 and played many important roles in the 1670s, including Benzayda in John Dryden's '' The Conquest of Granada'' (December 1670 and January 1671), and probably Rosalinda in Nathaniel Lee's ''Sophonisba'' (3 April 1675). Elizabeth James was an English stage actress of the seventeenth century. She was a member of the King's Company, based at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Martin Powell (actor)
Martin Powell was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century. Powell was a member of the King's Company from 1669 onwards at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. He was one of several actors who briefly left for Scotland in 1678 after a dispute with the management, before returning to Drury Lane. In 1682 he joined the merged United Company. Billed throughout his career as Mr. Powell, some of his later appearances can be confused with those of his son George Powell. Joseph Haines
Joseph Haines (died 4 April 1701), also known as Jo Haines, was a 17th-century actor, singer, dancer, guitar player, fortune teller, and author. ''The Life of the Late Famous Comedian, Jo. Hayns'', possibly written by fellow player Tobias Thomas, "must contain some grains of truth, but is so riddled with fancy that one can scarcely sort them out", according to the ''Biographical Dictionary of Actors'' (Highfill, et al. 1973–93). Nothing certain is known of Haines' early life. Michael Mohun
Michael Mohun (1616? – buried 11 October 1684) was a leading English actor both before and after the 1642–60 closing of the theatres. Mohun began his stage career as a boy player filling female roles; he was part of Christopher Beeston's theatrical establishment at the Cockpit Theatre, "eventually becoming a key member of Queen Henrietta's Men." For the period from 1642 to 1659, Mohun was an officer in military units loyal to the House of Stuart; he served in England, Ireland, and the Low Countries, and rose to the rank of major. He was seriously wounded at Dublin, and was a prisoner of war for two extended periods. At the end of the English Interregnum, Mohun was one of the men — George Jolly and John Rhodes were others — who attempted to restart dramatic performance. Edward Kynaston (actor)
Edward Kynaston (c. 1640 – January 1706) was an English actor, one of the last Restoration "boy players", young male actors who played women's roles. Career Kynaston was good looking and made a convincing woman: Samuel Pepys called him "the loveliest lady that ever I saw in my life" after seeing him in a production of John Fletcher's '' The Loyal Subject'' at the Cockpit-in-Court, "only her voice snot very good". He also played the title role in Ben Jonson's '' Epicoene''. Pepys had dinner with Kynaston after this production on 18 August 1660. Simultaneously, Kynaston played male roles as well. He filled the role of Otto in '' Rollo Duke of Normandy'' on 6 December 1660, having played the female role of Arthiope in the same play in previous weeks. John Lacy (playwright)
John Lacy (c. 1615? – 17 September 1681) was an English comic actor and playwright during the English Restoration, Restoration era. In his own time he gained a reputation as "the greatest comedian of his day" and was the favourite comic of King Charles II of England, Charles II. Life Lacy was born in or near Doncaster; in 1631 he became an apprentice of John Ogilby, when Ogilby was functioning as what was then called a "dancing master"—roughly the equivalent of a modern dance teacher and choreographer. Lacy's stage career began by 1639, when he was a member of Beeston's Boys. Lacy joined the royalist forces in the English Civil War, and was commissioned an officer (lieutenant and quartermaster). Philip Griffin
Philip Griffin was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century and early eighteenth century. He joined the King's Company at Drury Lane during the 1670s, and was later a member of the merged United Company from 1685. He was named as a manager at Drury Lane in 1695, but then took military service and was styled as Captain Griffin.
