Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal Regional Center
The Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal is an approved project for a container port at the mouth of the Mississippi. It will be at mile-marker zero and allow container ships with 70-foot drafts – and unlimited lengths, widths, and heights. It is designed to improve the supply chain of container on barge shipments on the Mississippi River and tributaries that are navigable in 32 states. A container port or container terminal is a facility where cargo containers are transshipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation. The transshipment may be between container ships and land vehicles, for example trains or trucks, in which case the terminal is described as a ''maritime container port''. Container on barge is a form of intermodal freight transport where containers are stacked on a barge and towed to a destination on an inland waterway. Mississippi River & tributaries There is limited use of this mode of transport because a lack of infrastructure on the upriver side in the United States.
