It runs in a northwest to southeast direction from Louisiana Highway 29, LA 29 in Whiteville, Louisiana, Whiteville to U.S. Route 90 in Louisiana, U.S. Highway 90 (US 90) north of Raceland, Louisiana, Raceland. Along the way, the highway serves the cities of Opelousas, Louisiana, Opelousas, Lafayette, Louisiana, Lafayette, New Iberia, Louisiana, New Iberia, Morgan City, Louisiana, Morgan City, and Houma, Louisiana, Houma. 1955 Louisiana Highway Renumbering
In 1955, Louisiana passed a law that undertook a comprehensive revision to the state highway classification and numbering system. The new system designated roads by importance to travel patterns and rectified the previous numbering system under new unified designations. History Highway numbers in Louisiana first appeared in 1921, per Act 95 of the 1921 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Routes 1 through 98 were defined that year. These first 98 routes remained consistent throughout the pre-1955 era. The lowest numbered routes seem to have followed major auto trails; for instance, LA 1 was the Jefferson Highway, LA 2 was the Old Spanish Trail, etc. The remainder of the numbering system seemed to work on a lower-number, higher-order principle, with some clustering; for instance, LA 61 and 62 both existed in St. Bernard Parish. Louisiana Highway 29
Louisiana Highway 29 (LA 29) is a state highway located in southern Louisiana. It runs in a north–south direction from LA 13 north of Eunice to LA 114 west of Moreauville. The route connects Eunice, a city in western St. Landry Parish, with Ville Platte, the seat of neighboring Evangeline Parish. Here, LA 29 briefly overlaps U.S. Highway 167 (US 167) and LA 10 through the center of town. North of Ville Platte, LA 29 crosses Interstate 49 (I-49) and parallels that highway toward Bunkie. It then passes through a string of small rural towns, such as Evergreen and Cottonport, connecting the US 71 and LA 1 corridors in Avoyelles Parish. Krotz Springs, Louisiana
Krotz Springs is a town in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States, on the Atchafalaya River. The population was 1,198 at the 2010 census, down from 1,219 in 2000. It is part of the Opelousas–Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Around the turn of the 20th century, an Ohio native, Charles William Krotz, bought of woodland around the Atchafalaya Basin and set up a sawmill to trim the trees hauled out of the basin. The tiny settlement that grew up around the mill was called Latania (''fan palm''), after the bayou of the same name and the types of palm plants found in the area. Thinking he was sitting on an untapped pool of oil, Krotz attempted to drill the first oil well in St. Landry Parish in 1900, but he struck water instead of oil, the result becoming known as Krotz’s spring. Eunice is a city in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, Acadia and St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, St. Landry parishes in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The 2010 United States Census, 2010 census placed the population at 10,398, a decrease of 1,101, or 9.5 percent, from the 2000 United States Census, 2000 tabulation of 11,499. Ville Platte, Louisiana
Ville Platte is the largest city in, and the parish seat of, Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,430 at the 2010 census, down from 8,145 in 2000. The city's name is of French origin, roughly translating to "flat town", in reference to its relatively flat topography in contrast to the more hilly terrain north of the area. History The area around Ville Platte appears to have been first settled during the last half of the eighteenth century, when Louisiana was under Spanish rule. The earliest record of settlement in the immediate area of Ville Platte was in the 1780s. Popular legend states the founder of Ville Platte was Marcellin Garand, an adjutant major in the Army of the French Empire during the reign of Napoleon. The route is not bannered but runs in an overall west–east direction from U.S. Highway 190 (US 190) near Lawtell to LA 31 in Leonville. Louisiana Highway 10 (LA 10) is a state highway located in southern Louisiana. It runs in an east–west direction from U.S. Highway 171 (US 171) south of Leesville to the Mississippi state line east of Bogalusa. The route connects a string of small towns and cities across the Central Louisiana, Acadiana, and Florida Parishes regions of the state. It runs parallel and to the north of the busier US 190 corridor. Louisiana Highway 89 (LA 89) is a state highway located in southern Louisiana. It runs in a north–south direction from LA 14 in Delcambre to an intersection with Church Street in Youngsville. The highway parallels the Vermilion–Iberia parish line from Delcambre, a small town partially located in both parishes, to a junction with LA 88 at Lozes. LA 89 then makes a turn into Lafayette Parish and proceeds to Youngsville, a small city and growing bedroom community of nearby Lafayette.
