Louise Taylor (jurist)
Louise Taylor is a judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, appointed on 26 July 2023 and due to be sworn in during August 2023. Before this appointment, she has been a Magistrate of the ACT since September 2018. She is the first Aboriginal person to be appointed as a judicial officer in the Australian Capital Territory, and the first Indigenous woman to become a Supreme Court judge in Australia. Early life and education Taylor grew up in inner-city Sydney. A Kamilaroi woman, her family was from the New England area of New South Wales. She moved to Canberra during high school, where she also attended the Australian National University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts as well as a Bachelor of Laws. Career Taylor was admitted to practice as a solicitor and barrister in 2001. Magistrates Court Of The Australian Capital Territory
The Magistrates Court of the Australian Capital Territory is a court of summary jurisdiction that deals with the majority of criminal law matters and the majority of small civil law matters in the Australian Capital Territory, the Jervis Bay Territory and the Australian Antarctic Territory. The current Chief Magistrate is Lorraine Walker, appointed with effect from 13 October 2011. However, Magistrate Glenn Theakston has been appointed Acting Chief Magistrate due to Walker's 12-month appointment as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court. Currently eight magistrates and one special magistrate assist the Chief Magistrate in hearing matters before the Court. The Indigenous Law Centre (ILC), formerly the Aboriginal Law Research Unit and Aboriginal Law Centre, is part of the Law Faculty at the University of New South Wales. Lincoln Crowley is an Australian lawyer, who was sworn in a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland on 13 June 2022, becoming the first Indigenous Australian to be appointed as a State or Territory justice. Justice Crowley grew up in Charters Towers, Queensland, attending high school there in the 1980's. His father was one of the Australian Defense Force's first Indigenous majors. Crowley studied at James Cook University, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor of Laws, and in 1999 was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from Queensland University of Technology. Warramunga
The Warumungu (or Warramunga) are a group of Aboriginal Australians of the Northern Territory. Today, Warumungu are mainly concentrated in the region of Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. Language Their language is Warumungu, belonging to the Pama–Nyungan family. It is similar to the Warlpiri spoken by the Warlpiri people. It is a ''suffixing language'', in which verbs are formed by adding a tense suffix (although some verbs are formed by compounding a ''preverb''). As are many of the surviving Indigenous Australian languages, the Warumungu language is undergoing rapid change. Colin Winchester
Colin Stanley Winchester (18 October 1933 – 10 January 1989) was an assistant commissioner in the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Winchester commanded ACT Police, the community policing component of the AFP responsible for the Australian Capital Territory. In 1989 he was assassinated by an unknown perpetrator.
