Louisa Martin
Mary Louisa "Mollie" Martin (3 September 1865 – 24 October 1941) was a tennis player from Ireland. She was considered the leading Irish female player of her time. Martin started playing tennis in 1885 and early on was successful at the tournaments in Bath and Buxton. In 1898 she entered the Wimbledon Championships for the first time and, after two wins and two byes, reached the All-comers' final, but was beaten in two sets by Charlotte Cooper. She did not play Wimbledon in 1899, and the following year, she again reached the All-comer's final to face Cooper and again lost. Her third and final entry at Wimbledon in 1901 also ended with a loss in the All-comers' final against Cooper. Martin won nine singles titles at the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships between 1889 and 1903 and was a runner-up three times. The Irish Open and originally known as the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and for sponsorship reasons also known as Carroll's Irish Open was a men's and women's tennis tournament held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland. Before the creation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the establishment of its world championship events in 1913, it was considered by players and historians one of the four most important tennis tournaments to win. the others being Wimbledon, the U.S. National championships and the Northern Championships. Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club is a tennis and squash club in south Dublin, Ireland. Established in 1877, Fitzwilliam is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world. It has held the Irish Open annually since the late 19th century. History In November 1877 ten men met to found the Dublin Lawn Tennis Club. This club was to initially consist of 30 members each paying an annual subscription of three pounds. They next met on 23 November 1877 and discussed leasing grounds in Upper Pembroke Street near to Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, Ireland owned by Sir Francis Brady a judge on a lease of ten years for a rent of twenty five pounds per year. On 6 December 1877 another meeting was convened and the committee assembled and agreed to adopt the name Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club as recommended by one of its members. Sydney Howard Smith
Sydney Howard Smith (3 February 1872 – 27 March 1947) was a British tennis and badminton player. Career Sydney Smith was the first All England Badminton Men's Singles champion in 1900. He reached his first Wimbledon singles final in 1899, beating Herbert Roper Barrett in an epic five set semi final before losing the all comers final to Arthur Gore in four sets. In 1900 Smith beat Gore in the all comers final at Wimbledon, before losing to Reginald Doherty in the challenge round in four sets. In 1905, Smith beat Holcombe Ward, Wilberforce Eaves, William Larned and Major Ritchie before losing the all comers final in five sets to Norman Brookes. Smith and partner Frank Riseley won the Gentlemen's Doubles title at Wimbledon in 1902 and 1906. He was a member of the British Davis Cup team in 1905 and 1906. Charlotte "Chattie" Cooper Sterry (née Charlotte Reinagle Cooper; 22 September 1870 – 10 October 1966) was an English female tennis player who won five singles titles at the Wimbledon Championships and in 1900 became Olympic champion. In winning in Paris on 11 July 1900, she became the first female Olympic tennis champion as well as the first individual female Olympic champion. Early life and career Charlotte Cooper was born on 22 September 1870 at Waldham Lodge, Ealing, Middlesex, England, the youngest daughter of Henry Cooper, a miller, and his wife Teresa Georgiana Miller. Newtowngore or Newtown Gore, known before the Plantations of Ireland as Ducarrick (), is a village on the R199 regional road in County Leitrim, in the north of the parish of Carrigallen. History Early history There is evidence of a number of ringforts in the immediate vicinity of the village, in the townlands of Carrickateane, Mullyaster, Tully North and Killydrum. According to the 9th-century ''Tripartite Life of St Patrick'', when Saint Patrick was on his way to Magh Slecht to destroy Crom Cruaich, he founded a church and ordained a priest to look after it named Bruscus. The site of this Patrician church is thought to have been near Newtowngore. The ruin in the grounds of the present Church of Ireland church in Newtowngore is likely the medieval church of Moy, which was dedicated to Saint Patrick.
