Louis Sansoni
Louis Sansoni (c.1775 - 10 February 1831) served as the second Postmaster General of Ceylon, between 1816 and 1825. Louis Guiseppi Sansoni was born c.1775, the second son of Guiseppi (Joseph) Sansoni, the Italian commander of the trading ship ''Livorna'' (named after the Italian city of Livorno). Guiseppi was employed by the Dutch East India Company and the ship voyaged between Europe and India/Ceylon in the 1630s to 1830s. Sansoni's older brother, Joseph (1770-1800), was the garrison surgeon at Galle. Sansoni's name was often incorrectly anglicised as Lewis. He served as the Custom master in Jaffna between 1813 and 1815. He was appointed as deputy Postmaster General on 1 September 1816 and took over the role as Postmaster General on 1 October 1816, following the retirement of Egbert Bletterman. Galle ( si, ගාල්ල, translit=Gālla; ta, காலி, translit=Kāli) (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the capital of Galle District. Galle was known as ''Gimhathiththa'' before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Kandy General Post Office
The Kandy General Post Office ( si, මහනුවර ප්රධාන තැපැල් කාර්යාලය - ) is the main post office in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The first post office was opened in Kandy in 1820, under the direction of the Postmaster General of Ceylon, Louis Sansoni. The first mail coach service, between Colombo and Kandy, began operations in 1832. History On 1 July 1857 an overland telegraph line, connecting the Colombo and the Kandy post offices, was opened. In September a submarine cable, connecting Ceylon with India, was laid between Thanaikai Point and Talamannar, with the line from Kandy to Manaar via Mihintale finished in October. George William Stewart
Major George William Stewart (25 September 1793 - 20 April 1841), was the third Postmaster General of Ceylon, serving from 1826 to 1833. Stewart was a lieutenant in the 19th Regiment of Foot, who were stationed in Ceylon between 1796 and 1820, during which time they were involved in the Kandyan Wars. In 1810 he was promoted to captain. He was appointed as the Postmaster General of Ceylon in 1826. During his tenure he was instrumental in extending the postal services to major towns in the colony. He went on to be commissioned in 1830 as a major in the Ceylon Rifle Regiment. After his retirement he became an oil merchant and had a chekku mill, and was known as 'Vanniya Stewart'. On 9 February 1807 Stewart married Maria Wilhelmina Sophia Tranchell (1791-1867), the daughter of Carl Jonas Tranchell (1754-1807), the Consul for Sweden in Ceylon. All Saints' Church, Galle
All Saints' Church is an Anglican church located within the Galle fort in Galle, Sri Lanka and is located on Church Road. History The decision to build an Anglican church at Galle, was initiated by the first Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Rev. James Chapman. The foundation of the church was laid on 30 October 1868, by Rev. Dr. Piers Calveley Claughton, the second Bishop of Colombo. The construction of the church was facilitated by a grant of the land and £600 from the 13th Governor of Ceylon, Sir Hercules Robinson. A further £1,000 contribution was received from an English parish. The church was designed by James George Smither, the government architect, who later designed the National Museum of Colombo. George Atkinson was the second Surveyor General of Ceylon. He was appointed in 1805, succeeding J. Johnwil, and held the office until 1811. Galle Fort Post Office
The Galle Fort Post Office is the post office in Galle Fort, Sri Lanka. The first post office was located at 92 Pedlar Street (originally known as Moor Street) and opened in 1820, under the direction of the Postmaster General of Ceylon, Lewis Sansoni. It was one of the five first post offices opened in the colony by the British. The first mail coach service, between Colombo and Galle, began operations on 2 July 1832. A two-horse coach would leave Galle at 6:00am and arrive in Colombo at 4:30pm. The night mail left Galle at 6:00pm and had to be un-harnessed and ferried across rivers at Gintota, Bentota and Kalutura. The post office was relocated to its current location on the corner of Church and Church Cross Streets in 1872. This building was constructed during the Dutch occupation and in 1868 was the Dutch Governor's official residence.
