George Atkinson (Surveyor General)
George Atkinson was the second Surveyor General of Ceylon. He was appointed in 1805, succeeding J. Johnwil, and held the office until 1811. Joseph Jonville
Joseph Jonville, also known as Eudelin de Jonville (1756–1837) was a French diplomat and naturalist, who was also the first Surveyor General of Ceylon, from 1800 to 1805. Joseph Marie Eudelin Mervé de Jonville was born on 2 September 1756 in Cairo, Egypt, the son of Thomas François Mervé de Jonville (1706-1778) and Therese Françoise née Lambert (1732-1773). Jonville spent his childhood in Smyrna, where his father was the French Consul then in Toulon, when his father retired. Jonville was appointed vice-consul in Nafplio (Morea), then in Rosetta, Egypt. He retired in 1784. The French Revolution saw him emigrate to Nice, a number of cities in Italy, and finally Corsica. In October 1798, he embarked for India on an English ship. Gualterus Schneider
Captain Gualterus Schneider (23 November 1772 - 10 September 1841) was the third Surveyor General of Ceylon. He was appointed in 1811, succeeding George Atkinson, and held the office until 1833. He was succeeded by F. B. Norris. Gualterus Schneider was born on 23 November 1772, in Jaffna, Ceylon, the son of Lieutenant Johann Hendrich Schneider (1753-?)and Christina Elizabeth née Schoorman (1749-1779). Schneider was 23 and employed in the engineering service of the Dutch East India Company as a landmeter (land surveyor), when the maritime provinces of Ceylon were ceded to the British. He accepted service under the British Government as civil engineer and was placed in charge of the Royal Engineers and the Ceylon Pioneer Lascars, a labour corps officered by Europeans, which was engaged in the construction of roads and bridges. Louis Sansoni
Louis Sansoni (c.1775 - 10 February 1831) served as the second Postmaster General of Ceylon, between 1816 and 1825. Louis Guiseppi Sansoni was born c.1775, the second son of Guiseppi (Joseph) Sansoni, the Italian commander of the trading ship ''Livorna'' (named after the Italian city of Livorno). Guiseppi was employed by the Dutch East India Company and the ship voyaged between Europe and India/Ceylon in the 1630s to 1830s. Sansoni's older brother, Joseph (1770-1800), was the garrison surgeon at Galle. Sansoni's name was often incorrectly anglicised as Lewis. He served as the Custom master in Jaffna between 1813 and 1815. He was appointed as deputy Postmaster General on 1 September 1816 and took over the role as Postmaster General on 1 October 1816, following the retirement of Egbert Bletterman. The Postmaster General of Sri Lanka is the appointed head of Sri Lanka Post, which is a government department. The current Postmaster General is Ranjith Ariyaratne. History The first mail service in Ceylon, was in 1788, established by the Dutch East India Company between Holland and Batavia via the Cape of Good Hope and Dutch Ceylon. They established postal offices in the coastal trading centres of Colombo, Galle, Jaffna and Mannar. In 1795 the Dutch were expelled by the British and the Maritime Provinces were initially administered by the British East India Company. Two years later Ceylon became a Crown Colony. In 1798, a British officer, Captain Kennedy, was appointed as a competent postal authority. In 1815, following the signing of the Kandyan Convention the British took control of the entire country.
