Louis Cools-Lartigue
Sir Louis Cools-Lartigue, OBE (18 January 1905 – 21 August 1993) was a Dominican politician. Biography Until 1955, Cools-Lartigue was the Chief Secretary of the Windward Islands, when on 9 May he was issued a Commission by George F. Holsten appointing him to the position of Governor's Deputy. From November 1967 to 3 November 1978, Cools-Lartigue was the last Governor of Dominica. He was then elected Interim President and served as such from 3 November 1978 to 19 January 1979, until Fred Degazon was elected President of Dominica. During a constitutional crisis stirred by the desire for democratic socialist reforms, Degazon fled to England on 10 June 1979 and Cools-Lartigue was elected by the House of Assembly of Dominica, House of Assembly as his replacement on 15 June 1979. Cools-Lartigue resigned as President either the following day under family pressure, or due to rioters attacking his house on 17 June 1979. He was replaced as President of Dominica by Jenner Armour. Jenner Bourne Maude Armour (15 November 1932 – 25 July 2001) was a politician and barrister from Dominica who served as the interim (acting) President of Dominica from 1979 to 1980. Biography He earned a Master of Laws degree in 1959 at the University of London and began practice in 1960. He was a barrister for over 40 years and worked in other countries such as Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla. Following a constitutional crisis and the departure of president Fred Degazon, he became an interim head of state. After Degazon's formal resignation in February 1980, he turned his function over to newly elected Aurelius Marie. The House of Assembly is the legislature of Dominica. It is established by Chapter III of the Constitution of Dominica, and together with the President of Dominica constitutes Dominica's Parliament. The House is unicameral, and consists of twenty-one Representatives, nine senators, and the Attorney General as an ''ex officio'' member. The Speaker of the House becomes the thirty-second member if chosen from outside the membership of the House. Representatives are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple-majority (or first-past-the-post) system for a term of five years. The Representatives in turn decide whether the senators are to be elected by their vote, or appointed. Patrick Roland John
Patrick Roland John (7 January 1938 – 6 July 2021) was the first Prime Minister of Dominica as well as its last Premier. He led Dominica to independence from the United Kingdom. He was leader of the Waterfront and Allied Workers' Union and mayor of Roseau before being elected to the legislature in 1970. He became Premier in 1974 following the resignation of Edward Oliver LeBlanc. After mass protest forced him to resign, John unsuccessfully attempted in 1981 to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Eugenia Charles with the backing of white supremacist groups (in what became dubbed "Operation Red Dog"). As a result, he was jailed for twelve years, of which he served five years. On 6 July 2021, John died at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in Roseau, Dominica, at the age of 83.
