A telenovela is a type of a television serial drama or soap opera produced primarily in Latin America. The word combines ''tele'' (for "television") and ''novela'' (meaning "novel"). Similar drama genres around the world include '' teleserye'' (Philippines), '' téléroman'' (Canada, specifically Quebec), and ''sinetron'' (Indonesia). Commonly described using the American colloquialism Spanish soap opera, many telenovelas share some stylistic and thematic similarities to the soap opera familiar to the English-speaking world. The significant difference is their series run length; telenovelas tell one self-contained story, typically within the span of a year or less whereas soap operas tend to have intertwined storylines told during indefinite, continuing runs. This makes them shorter than most other television series, but still much longer than a miniseries. Thelma Reston
Thelma Salim Reston (6 July 1937 – 20 December 2012) was a Brazilian film, theater, and television actress. Thelma Reston was born in Piracanjuba, Goiás. She began a theater career in the 1960s and work in television in the 1970s. Reston's earlier filmography includes the 1967 film ''Entranced Earth'' and the 1984 film ''Quilombo''. She also took part in the 1992 telenovela '' Pedra sobre Pedra''. Her most recent television credits included ''A Lua Me Disse'' in 2005, ''Negócio da China'' in 2009, and ''Escrito nas Estrelas'' in 2010. Francisca Xavier Queiroz de Jesus, known professionally as Chica Xavier (January 22, 1932 – August 8, 2020), was a Brazilian actress and producer. Xavier worked in stage, film, and television. She was known primarily for her work in Rede Globo's telenovelas, but was active in stage for 60 years. Xavier was born in Salvador, Bahia. She was married to actor Clementino Kelé. Xavier started working at 14 years as bookbinder at the Official Press of the State of Bahia. She moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1953 and studied theater with Pascoal Carlos Magno. Fernando Monteiro Torres (14 November 1927 – 4 September 2008) was a Brazilian actor and voice-over artist, as well as a television, film and theater director and producer. Torres' career in Brazilian film, stage and television spanned over five decades.
