Los Tarantos
''Los Tarantos'' is a 1963 Spanish musical drama film directed by Francisco Rovira Beleta. It was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category. The film is based on the play ''La historia de los Tarantos'' written by Alfredo Mañas, and inspired by ''Romeo and Juliet'' by William Shakespeare. Plot The love between two gipsies, Juana La Zoronga and Rafael El Taranto, from different families in Barcelona is thwarted by the enmity between their respective parents. Rafael sees Juana dance at a gipsy wedding, and is captivated by her beauty and charm, and they fall in love, aided by their younger siblings who are secretly friends and sympathetic to the young lovers. Francisco Rovira Beleta (Barcelona, 1913 – 23 June 1999) was a twice Academy Award nominee Spanish screenwriter and film director. His film '' Los atracadores'' was entered into the 12th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1963 film '' Los Tarantos'' was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category. Daniel Martín (12 May 1935 – 28 September 2009) was a Spanish actor. He was known for his role as Rafael in the film ''Los Tarantos'' (1963), directed by Francisco Rovira Beleta and starring Antonio Gades and Carmen Amaya. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at 36th edition. He played Condor in the Spaghetti western film ''Blood River'' (1974), starring Fabio Testi, John Ireland and Rosalba Neri, and Julián in ''A Fistful of Dollars'' (1964). This is a list of submissions to the 36th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non- English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country.
