Los Moonlights
Los Moonlights is a rock band from Montevideo, Uruguay. Their debut album, ''Moonlights'', was their greatest commercial success. Formed in the 1960s, Los Moonlights disbanded in 1977. They reunited in 2015. History Formed at the end the 1960s and fronted by the Iriarte brothers, Los Moonlights began by playing live covers. With the arrival of longtime members Gastón "Dino" Ciarlo and Yamandu Pérez, they began writing original material. After recording a few singles for the Clave label, Los Moonlights signed with De La Planta. They recorded their debut album, which contains songs such as "Vamos dulce muchacha" and "Milonga de pelo largo". They mainly played shows in small local establishments. Montevideo
Montevideo () is the Capital city, capital and List of cities in Uruguay, largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of . Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. Rock En Español
Rock en español () is a term used widely in the English-speaking world to refer to any kind of rock music featuring Spanish vocals. Compared to English-speaking bands, very few acts reached worldwide success or between Spanish-speaking countries due to a lack of promotion. Despite ''rock en español''s origins in the late 1950s, many rock acts achieved at best nationwide fame until the Internet consolidated the listeners. However, some ''rock en español'' artists did become internationally popular with the help of a promotional campaign from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s called "" ("Rock in your language"). Some specific rock-based styles influenced by folkloric rhythms have also developed in these regions. 1973 Uruguayan Coup D'état
The 1973 Uruguayan coup d'état took place in Uruguay on 27 June 1973 and marked the beginning of the civic-military dictatorship which lasted until 1985. President Juan María Bordaberry closed parliament and ruled with the assistance of a junta of military generals. The official reason was to crush the Tupamaros, a Marxist urban guerrilla movement. The leftist trade union federations called a general strike and occupation of factories. The strike lasted just over two weeks. It was ended with most of the trade union leaders in jail, dead, or exiled to Argentina. As part of the coup all associations including trade unions were declared illegal and banned; the Constitution of Uruguay of 1967 was practically voided. Unions and political parties remained illegal until a general strike in 1984 forced the military to accept civilian rule and the restoration of democracy in 1985.
