Lorenz Saladin
Lorenz Saladin (28 October 1896 – 17 September 1936), was a Swiss mountain-climber, journalist, photographer and traveler. His large archive of photographs and reports of his expeditions were discovered in Russian sources in 2008. Life Saladin was born in Nuglar-St. Pantaleon, in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland. He came from a modest background, and ended up in a home when his parents divorced. He worked at different jobs and during WW1 was patrolling the Swiss frontier. Between 1920 and 1932 he travelled through Europe, South America and the USA, taking on whatever odd jobs he could find. During this time he started to take an interest in photography and became a first-class photographer. Politically he was a member of the Communist Party of Switzerland (KPS). He had always taken a great interest in mountain climbing and in Switzerland was a member of several climbing clubs. Mountaineer
Mountaineering or alpinism, is a set of outdoor activities that involves ascending tall mountains. Mountaineering-related activities include traditional outdoor climbing, skiing, and traversing via ferratas. Indoor climbing, sport climbing, and bouldering are also considered variants of mountaineering by some. Unlike most sports, mountaineering lacks widely applied formal rules, regulations, and governance; mountaineers adhere to a large variety of techniques and philosophies when climbing mountains. Vitaly Abalakov
Vitaly Mikhaylovich Abalakov (russian: Вита́лий Миха́йлович Абала́ков) ( – 26 May 1986Great Russian Encyclopedia (2006), Moscow: Bol'shaya Rossiyskaya Enciklopediya Publisher, vol. 1, p. 9) was a Soviet chemical engineer, mountaineer and inventor. Brother of Yevgeniy Abalakov, another famous alpinist, he made the first Soviet ascent of Lenin Peak in 1934 and two more ascents of this mountain. In 1936 he also made the ascent of Khan Tengri, where he lost several fingers and part of his foot. In 1938, he and others from his team were arrested by NKVD and were under investigation until 1940. He was accused of "open public propaganda" of western mountaineering techniques and "diminishing" domestic alpinists' achievements and being a "German spy". Abalakov is credited with such inventions as camming devices in the 1930s, Abalakov thread (or V-thread) gearless ice climbing anchor, and many other climbing equipment innovations. Swiss Alpine Museum
The Swiss Alpine Museum (german: Schweizerisches Alpines Museum; french: Musée Alpin Suisse) is a museum dedicated to the nature and culture of the Swiss Alps. It is located at '' Helvetiaplatz'' 4 in Bern. History The Swiss Alpine Museum was founded in 1905 by the Bernese section of the Swiss Alpine Club in the '' Rathaus zum Äusseren Stand'' on ''Zeughausgasse''. The museum moved into its current premises on Helvetiaplatz in 1933. Built by architects Klauser and Streit in the '' Neues Bauen'' style, the building responds to the 1918 ''Kunsthalle Bern'' across the road. The museum underwent a renovation and restoration from 1990 to 1993. Since 1933, the museum has been constituted as a foundation supported by the Swiss Alpine Club, the University of Bern, swisstopo, the Federal Office of the Environment, and the Office of Culture of the Canton of Bern. Robert Steiner (writer)
Robert Steiner (born 7 December 1976), is a German mountain climber and writer. Steiner was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and grew up in Ostelsheim in the Black Forest. After finishing his Abitur he studied Geography and German in Freiburg im Breisgau to become a teacher. Steiner started mountain-climbing at the age of 17 and went on to climb the Eiger, Matterhorn and Grandes Jorasses. He then climbed Bigwall in British Columbia and took part in expeditions to Mount Everest, Langtang in Tibet, Rolwaling and Tien Shan. In 1997 he had a serious accident at Grandes Jorasses which made him review his attitude to climbing, after which he wrote his first book.
