Lord Vestey
Baron Vestey, of Kingswood in the County of Surrey, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1922 for the shipping magnate Sir William Vestey, 1st Baronet. He was the co-founder of the Blue Star Line. Vestey had already been created a baronet, of Bessémer House in the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, in 1913. , the titles are held by the fourth Baron, who succeeded his father in 2021 and is the eldest grandson of the Hon. William Vestey (who was killed in action in Italy during the Second World War in 1944), the only son of the second Baron. The current holder's father, the 3rd Baron Vestey, served as Master of the Horse from 1999 to 2018. Sir Edmund Vestey, 1st Baronet, co-founder of the Blue Star Line, was the younger brother of the first Baron Vestey. The family seat is Stowell Park, in the Cotswold Hills, Gloucestershire. Kingswood, Dulwich
Kingswood House, formerly known as King's Coppice, is a Victorian mansion in South Dulwich, at the southerly tip of the London Borough of Southwark, United Kingdom. It is a Grade II listed building. It is now used an arts and community centre called Kingswood Arts. In 1811 William Vizard, the solicitor to Queen Caroline in her divorce from George IV, was granted a 63-year lease for Kingswood Lodge. When Vizard returned to his native Gloucestershire in 1831, others were granted the property leases. From 1891 the house was owned by John Lawson Johnston (inventor of Bovril) who extended the house and remodelled the facade including adding battlements. Johnston acquired the nickname Mr Bovril and because of its castellated features Kingswood became known locally as Bovril Castle. Vestey Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for members of the Vestey family, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both creations are extant as of 2010. The Vestey Baronetcy, of Bessemer House, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 21 June 1913 for William Vestey. In 1921 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Vestey (see this title for more information). The Vestey Baronetcy, of Shirley in the County of Surrey, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 27 June 1921 for Edmund Vestey. Samuel George Armstrong Vestey, 3rd Baron Vestey, (19 March 1941 – 4 February 2021) was a British peer, landowner, and businessman. He served as Master of the Horse to Queen Elizabeth II from 1999 to 2018. Lord Vestey was part of the family dynasty that founded and still runs the Vestey Holdings multinational corporation. Samuel Vestey, 2nd Baron Vestey (25 December 1882 – 4 May 1954) was a British noble. Early life He was the son of William Vestey, 1st Baron Vestey, and was educated at Merton College, Oxford, matriculating in 1901. He served as Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1933. He succeeded to the title on his father's death in 1940. Career He was a Justice of the Peace, and photographs of him by Lafayette are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Stowell Park Estate is a historic agricultural and sporting estate in the Cotswold Hills, Gloucestershire, England. The estate includes the village of Yanworth. The main house is a Grade II* listed building and surrounded by extensive parkland, a mill, and church. The landscaped park is listed Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. History The house was built around 1600 for Robert Atkinson, on the site of a previous house. The manor is first recorded in 1086 when it was held by the Archbishop of York. Sir Edmund Hoyle Vestey, 1st Baronet (3 February 1866 – 18 November 1953) was an English food producer and importer and shipowner, and co-founder with his brother William of Vestey Brothers. Early life Vestey was born in Rainford, Lancashire, the fifth child of provision merchant Samuel Vestey. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute and then joined his father's firm in 1883. Career He was soon given the management of his father's corned beef cannery in Chicago. In 1890 he joined William in his new business of importing refrigerated meat from Argentina. The Union Cold Storage Company was to become one of the world's largest cold storage operations. They began to diversify into other food products and in 1906 also began importing from China.
