Lord Montagu Graham
Lord Montagu William Graham (2 February 1807 – 21 June 1878) was a British Conservative politician. Background Graham was a younger son of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose, by his second wife Lady Caroline Maria, daughter of George Montagu, 4th Duke of Manchester. James Graham, 4th Duke of Montrose, was his elder brother. Political career Graham was Member of Parliament (MP) for Dunbartonshire from 1830 to 1832, for Grantham from 1852 to 1857, and for Herefordshire from 1858 to 1865. Family Graham married the Hon. Harriet Anne, daughter of William Bateman-Hanbury, 1st Baron Bateman, and widow of George Dashwood, in 1867. He died in June 1878, aged 71. His wife survived him by six years and died in April 1884. 1865 United Kingdom General Election
The 1865 United Kingdom general election saw the Liberals, led by Lord Palmerston, increase their large majority over the Earl of Derby's Conservatives to 80. The Whig Party changed its name to the Liberal Party between the previous election and this one. Palmerston died in October the same year and was succeeded by Lord John Russell as Prime Minister. Despite the Liberal majority, the party was divided by the issue of further parliamentary reform, and Russell resigned after being defeated in a vote in the House of Commons in 1866, leading to minority Conservative governments under Derby and then Benjamin Disraeli. This was the last United Kingdom general election until 2019 where a party increased its majority after having been returned to office at the previous election with a reduced majority. Joseph Russell Bailey, 1st Baron Glanusk (7 April 1840 – 6 January 1906), known as Sir Joseph Bailey, 2nd Baronet, from 1858 to 1899, was a Welsh Conservative Member of Parliament. Life Born at Leamington Spa, he was the son of Joseph Bailey, eldest son of the ironmaster Sir Joseph Bailey, 1st Baronet, and his wife, the eldest daughter of William Congreve Russell. He succeeded his grandfather as second Baronet, of Glanusk Park, in 1858. In 1864, he served as High Sheriff of Brecknockshire. In 1865 he was elected to the British House of Commons for Herefordshire, a seat he held until 1885 when the constituency was abolished, and then represented Hereford between 1886 and 1892.
