Lord Alexander Gordon-Lennox
Lord Alexander Francis Charles Gordon-Lennox (14 June 1825 – 22 January 1892), was a British Conservative politician. Background Gordon-Lennox was the fourth son of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond, and Lady Caroline, daughter of Field Marshal Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. Charles Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond and Lord Henry Lennox were his elder brothers and Lord George Gordon-Lennox his younger brother. Political career Gordon-Lennox was elected Member of Parliament for New Shoreham in 1849, a seat he held until 1859. He was also a Captain in the Royal Horse Guards. Family Gordon-Lennox married Emily, daughter of Colonel Charles Towneley and Lady Caroline Molyneux, in 1863. Marie Tempest
Dame Mary Susan Etherington, (15 July 1864 – 15 October 1942), known professionally as Marie Tempest, was an English singer and actress. Tempest became a famous soprano in late Victorian light opera and Edwardian musical comedies. Later, she became a leading comic actress and toured widely in North America and elsewhere. She was, at times, her own theatre manager during a career spanning 55 years. She was also instrumental in the founding of the actors' union Equity in Britain. Sir Stephen Cave (28 December 1820 – 6 June 1880) was a British lawyer, writer and Conservative politician. He notably served as Paymaster-General between 1866 and 1868 and again between 1874 and 1880 and as Judge Advocate General between 1874 and 1875. Background and education Born at Clifton, Cave was the eldest son of Daniel Cave, of Cleve Hill, near Bristol (d. 9 March 1872), by his marriage on 15 April 1820 to Frances, only daughter of Henry Locock, MD, of London. The banker Sir Charles Cave, 1st Baronet, was his younger brother. He was educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1843 and MA in 1846. Charles Goring (14 July 1817 – 17 November 1849) was a British Conservative politician and first-class cricketer. Goring was the son of Charles Goring (1744–1797) and Mary née Ballard, and brother of John Goring (born 1824). He was educated at Winchester College, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1835. He graduated B.A. there in 1843, and M.A. in 1847. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University from 1836–38, making four appearances. Sir Charles Burrell, 3rd Baronet
Sir Charles Merrik Burrell, 3rd Baronet (24 May 1774 – 4 January 1862) was an English Conservative politician, who represented the seat of New Shoreham for fifty-six years, becoming Father of the House of Commons. Burrell was born at Golden Square, London, the son of Sir William Burrell, 2nd Baronet and his wife Sophia Raymond. He succeeded to the title of Baronet Raymond of Valentine House on 20 January 1796. In 1806 he was elected as M.P. for New Shoreham and he held the seat until his death in 1862. Burrell built a country mansion near Knepp Castle, known by the same name, near West Grinstead and purchased an estate at Boulton. He owned a house in Richmond Terrace, London which was the subject of a court case in 1833 in which he argued that because the house was on the site of the former Palace of Whitehall, it was not liable to the poor rate of St. Margaret's, Westminster. Cosmo Gordon-Lennox
Cosmo Charles Gordon-Lennox (17 August 1869 – 31 July 1921), whose stage name was Cosmo Stuart, was a British actor and playwright of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. He became known as an actor in the 1890s, but by the turn of the century he had begun to concentrate on writing, usually under his real name. He specialised in adapting French comedies for the British stage, but also wrote original works, often as vehicles for his wife, the actress Marie Tempest. Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond, (3 August 179121 October 1860), of Goodwood House near Chichester in West Sussex, was a British peer, soldier and prominent Conservative politician. Origins He was born "Charles Lennox", the son and heir of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond (1764-1819) by his wife Lady Charlotte Gordon, the eldest child of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon.
