Loop, Indiana County, Pennsylvania
Loop was an unincorporated community in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The community was named for its location near a loop in the meandering Mahoning Creek. Lysander Barrett settled in the area around 1842; an iron furnace was erected in 1847. West Mahoning Township is a township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,337 at the 2020 census. The township surrounds Smicksburg, a separately incorporated borough. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 29.4 square miles (76.1 km2), all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,128 people, 277 households, and 244 families residing in the township. The population density was 38.4 people per square mile (14.8/km2). Meander
A meander is one of a series of regular sinuous curves in the channel of a river or other watercourse. It is produced as a watercourse erodes the sediments of an outer, concave bank ( cut bank) and deposits sediments on an inner, convex bank which is typically a point bar. The result of this coupled erosion and sedimentation is the formation of a sinuous course as the channel migrates back and forth across the axis of a floodplain. The zone within which a meandering stream periodically shifts its channel is known as a meander belt. It typically ranges from 15 to 18 times the width of the channel.
