The Northern Wildcats were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based out of Longlac, Ontario. They played out of the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. :Longlac Merchants 1996 - 1998 :Northern Wildcats 1998 - 2002 History The Longlac Merchants were founded in 1996 and were original members of the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. After joining the NSHL in 1996, the Longlac Merchants did not enjoy much success. In 1998, the team changed their name to the Northern Wildcats but their statistics continued to dwindle. North Of Superior Junior B Hockey League
The North of Superior Junior B Hockey League (NSHL) is a defunct Junior ice hockey league in Ontario, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The league used to be a part of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. History The North of Superior Junior B Hockey League was the brain-child of Chris Joubert of Terrace Bay, Ontario. He served as president of the NSHL for its first two years before stepping down due to work commitments. Claude Montfort of Marathon, Ontario took over after him. The league occupied most of the same zone as the old International Junior B Hockey League. The first season, 1996–97, the league consisted of the Aguasabon River Rats, Longlac Merchants, Marathon Renegades, and Wawa Travellers. In 1997, the Hearst Elans, who played previously under Hockey Quebec, joined the league and made an instant impact. Wawa Travellers
The Wawa Travellers were a Junior "B" team based out of Wawa, Ontario. They played in the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League. History The Travellers played in all eight of the NSHL's seasons. After a slow start, the team moved through the standings and in their final two seasons they topped the league, winning the league championship, in both 2002-03 and 2003-04. Despite two championships, the Travellers finished their story in 2004 with a 4-straight-losses to the Thunder Bay Northern Hawks of Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League in the Northern Ontario Regional Junior B Hockey Championship. After the 2003-04 season, the Thessalon Flyers and Aguasabon River Rats left the NSHL. With only the Travellers and the Marathon Renegades left in the league, it folded. Marathon Renegades
The Marathon Renegades were a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Marathon, Ontario. They were currently members of the Superior International Junior Hockey League. History They were members of the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League from 1996 until 2004. There was some speculation as to whether or not the team were known as the Marathon Renegades or the North Shore Renegades in the 2006-07 season. When reached for comment, the league stated that they are still currently known as the Marathon Renegades. The Renegades had their official "roll-out" on July 7 in Marathon. The Executive consists of Al Cresswell, President; John Moreau, Past President; Denis Leduc, General Manager; Don Savoie, Assistant General Manager; and John Hooper, Director of Sales/Voice of the Renegades. Aguasabon River Rats
The Aguasabon River Rats were a Junior "B" ice hockey team based out of Terrace Bay, Ontario. They played out of the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League (NSHL) and the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League. History The Aguasabon River Rats played in every season of the NSHL's history. The River Rats always did well, but from 1999-00 until 2001-02 the River Rats were the best in the league—three straight championships. The team even earned the right to play for the Western Canadian Junior "B" title, the Keystone Cup, on two occasions. The 1999–00 season was remarkable in that not only did the team win its first ever league title, but it also completed a perfect undefeated regular season. After the 2003–04 season, the River Rats and Thessalon Flyers chose not to pursue another season in the NSHL.
